Can anyone tell me what it means when:
1) the oil pressure gauge drops to no reading then might kick in again? oil is at max level. everything seems fine. loose gauge sensor?
2) whats the indicator/light beside the (P) mean? it flickers on and off some times?

Is the mistress just demanding more attention?

often this is caused by a dodgy earth on the sender ( i was told ). alternatively could be the gauge or your oil pressure dropping to 0! - but i guess that would be accompanied by a massive increase in water temp and stopping shortly thereafter.
i had to have a new sender a while ago, and about 2 months after that the gauge packed up again. do a search 'cos i asked this question less than 6months ago ( i think! ).

It could be a dodgy oil pump I had the same on a polo a few years ago light flickered on then off intermitantly a friend checked said everything was fine engine then siezed one week later, required new engine if I were you I would get it checked out immediatly. I would not drive it until I was sure that I definatly had oil pressure. Are you in the RAC or AA or any rescue service because they should be able to check it/advise you!!!!!

If you switch on but don't start the ignition, the ignition warning light, oil warning light and handbrake/low brake fluid warning light should all come on. Put the handbrake off and the handbrake warning light should go off. Start the car and the other two lights should go off. Blip the throttle and switch off, and the ignition warning light should glow briefly as the engine spins down. The final light is the oil warning light. You should treat any oil pressure warning as potentially terminal unless you can prove the oil pressure is OK, for example by checking the pressure gauge.

thanks for the replies, turns out its probably just the sender unit as the red oil warning light isnt showing up apart from when the engine's off. *phew*

Low oil pressure warning light is yellow - isn't it?
Ignition charge light is red.

Mine's red. Obviously depends on what day of the week. Yellow doesn't sound like an obvious colour. IMHO it should be red, and flashing! :-)

it was just a sensor thing *phew* £50 to fix (vs £5000?). Top Gear here we come!

btw, if ever your oil pressure gauge gives dodgy readings, hits 0 and the oil light comes on you really need to panic! something to remember...
