Shooting Bears

Smashing stuff - although it looks like mosquito-land!
If you are into your bears I thoroughly recommend "Grizzly Man", a documentary by Werner Herzog. All about a chap with a bit of a messiah complex who lived with the bears for a long time, but paid the ultimate price for anthropomorphising them.

Great photosAs an aside - wasn't this chap an utter
? Putting himself in the line of fire was fair enough - Darwinism in pure form. But exposing his girlfriend and realising their true nature only as the bear was eating his face off was seriously dim and selfish IMO.Phil

Mr Thunder - they were taken on Grouse Mountain..
Spookily enough we're heading to Knights Inlet Lodge on Friday for four nights/five days. Currently in Tofino...
Did you stay at the lodge ? Anything to report...?
We stayed in Telegraph Cove and went across to the inlet by boat. We saw the mother and cub and a couple of others, not that many this time but the salmon run hadn't started (and was expected to be poor).Spookily enough we're heading to Knights Inlet Lodge on Friday for four nights/five days. After that we stayed in Tofino for about 10 days. Went up Fortune Channel and Tofino Inlet a couple of times and there were more black bears than ever, mainly on the beaches looking for crab. We went out with Mike on the 'Browning Passage', much more relaxing than the Zodiacs. We also drove up the logging trails above Tofino Inlet and found a few on the road.
Been back a couple of weeks and still got 6-700 bear photos to process.

Photos are absolute amazing... I hope they were taken from very far away
... as this chap's experience tells us - as mentioned above.

Great shots...more please!
Martin.
Canada, Alaska and Yellowstone are apparantly the best places to see them
(we saw several Black bears in Banff canada!)

Timothy Treadwell was an odd character and no mistake, he seemed to view himself as the saviour of these bears, which frankly didn't need a saviour as they live in a protected habitat.

It's a very interesting movie - he put himself in the line of fire as you put it - for 13 years, without so much as an injury to show for it - he did however become increasingly paranoid and defensive, and stayed one year way past the point he would normally have left.
It was then that he encountered a bear which had not yet gone into hibernation and was no doubt extremely hungry. You can guess the rest.
Mr Thunder - you must have seen this in Tofino... Looks like it had been there for quite some time..

If only you could take things like this home...
I had also wondered why some of my bear pics were fuzzy... Note to self, turn on IS when you're finished with the 100-400 on the tripod from the night before.

Nice piccies! I was in Tofino 10 days ago, now back in the UK unfortunately! *scribbles furiously* must go bear-watching next year . . .
We did see a black bear strolling across from Whistler to Blackcomb mountain, just outside our window, last Monday when we were leaving. Which was nice

That's spooky.. Logged in today and happened to sail into Telegraph cove yesterday...
1947 Dodge.

Oh and another bear or two to keep folks happy.. This one from Knights Inlet..
If I stand up here like Mum says' I should be able to see the fish..

I'll try just a little higher..

Perhaps if I balance on top I could see them.

Nah - I'll just sit here and watch..

mum catching the fish for me.
