Hello everyone.

I've just started to seriously consider getting a cerbera, and naturally i'm incredibly excited and also slightly terrified at the same time.

Obviously I'm concerned re: reliability, but what I wanted to know and haven't been able to satisfy myself with answer for, is whether there is much difference in the reliability between the straight six's and the V8's?

Thanks for replies in advance.

Big Al.

wavey

The s6 tends to have a catostrophic failure when it lets go, where as the v8's may need just a bit of a freshen up when they start getting a bit thirsty.

if you look through the last few yrs of threads you might find a couple that give a thumbs up to the S6 Cerb.

Especially as the likes of "Power" do two year warranties on S6 rebuilds.

V8 of course, you can never be too thin, too rich or have too many cylinders under your bonnet, 12 or 16 would be even better!

I chose mine purely on the fact saying its a V8 sounds better than a 6 when asked!!

Aint no replacement for displacement..

Personally speaking, I much prefer the sound of the straight six, but the reliability issues made me go for the V8. It sounds nice, but not the classic V8 soundtrack you would expect due to the flat plane crank configuration.

The six is great when sorted, and sounds superb. They are generally cheaper too so if you can put aside a nice fat contingency pot then it's a good choice. Runs smoother too and is a more 'day to day' drivable car. Ther is no shortage of fun in a six.

Love to drive a V8 (cerb) though to give more objective comparison

Worth bearing in mind (apologies if you know this already) that, at least as I understand it, the six runs a slightly slower steering rack (0.4 turns lock to lock slower) softer suspension and higher-profile tyres than either V8 version, so this may contribute to more day-to-day suitability. That said, I don't think that the V8 rides too badly (certainly better than my Chimaera).

The S6 has it's own forum.

Draw your own conclusion.

The straight 6 is known to have been designed by Willy Wonker and built at charlies chocolate factory with cadburies fingers and ice-cream wafer gaskets and maltesers valve seats, yummy while it lasts, pisses your missis and your bank manager off when she melts down on ya.

where as...

the V8 was designed by the British Bulldog and built, heavily raced and tested at WWF, and has the most unique engine note out there second only to a tubi'd fezza's braaaaaaa...

Take your pick, I know which way would let me sleep at nite.... wink

My opinion.
S6 says what it does on the tin - someone will need to spend on a V8 to get the power.

S6 power delivery is balistic, V8 quite boring - again, my opinion.

I much prefer the S6 to the AJP V8, but I belive the Cerb should have the V8, it suits the car.

Yeah but he's probably talking an 'early' speed 6.... in which case I dont think encouraging him in that direction would be a wise move.... wink

Thanks for all your replies.
I'm actually going to see a S6 on friday. Its an earlier car, 98 or 99, not sure which. I guess it'll be a case of having a drive in both and making up my own mind!

This was part of a write up from a mate that came to the Ring with us and drove my 4.5. He was so against me buying the car a few months ago and now loves it :

The noise it makes is something to behold. I can honestly say that it’s a strong contender for the greatest engine note ever. Better than a NASCAR V8. Better than a 355 on Tubi pipes. In fact I struggle to think of a more aurally gratifying noise. The nearest thing I can think of to compare it to is a Cosworth DFV – quite bassy, but hard edged with it. There’s very little engine inertia, so the revs rise and fall almost like a bike engine. And when you throttle back, especially when the engine’s hot, you get a cacophony of gunshots, like the home-guard have been scrambled to man the ack-ack guns in preparation for an aerial assault. It’s got a really aggressive bite to the noise, where a Chevy or Rover V8 sounds mellower, lazier. Like a cross between a race small-block, crossed with a bike engine, snarling through gritted teeth. I don’t think a car has ever been more appropriately named – it sounds exactly like I’d imagine the two-headed dog that guards the gates to hell would sound like if you got on the wrong side of him.
