Applying and removing decals
Discussion
Usual way of removing stickers is to warm the area with a hair dryer or heat gun, get a fingernail under an edge/corner and then slowly peel them off.
For large stickers you need to start at one end and slowly work along them, heating and pulling as you go.
Get it right and you can get the sticker off in one piece leaving virtually no adhesive behind, while what adhesive residue there is can be removed by wiping with white spirit.

Just done this and removed my 60th Anniversary sticker.
Used the hairdryer as suggested, just be patient heating and pulling the sticker off which came off nicely but left glue residual.
Not wanting white spirit anywhere near my car I used my clay bar and detailing spray, did the job perfectly.

I'd also make sure there was a nice layer or two of wax that can come off after rather than the paint

Aha! Thanks for adding this. Obviously my main concern was not peeling off any paint (if and when the sticker comes off) and I wasn't sure if there were any 'pre-operative' precautions to take. Nice one!

I'd disagree - you want a bare surface to apply the graphic to, not a waxed one because it won't stick as well.
Unless you've got major problems with your paint, you shouldn't have any problems at all removing stickers, as long as you warm it with a hairdryer. Any glue residue can be quickly, safely and easily removed with a tar & glue removing fluid (then wash the area afterwards).
I just bought a van and whilst it seemed to take forever, I had no paint problems removing this lot:
