Hi,

I am looking to replace my standard radio/tape head unit with a new headunit.

I would like to do this job myself.

My first question is, how do I remove the present unit? There do not appear to be any bits to hold onto and to pull it out? Are there any tips or tricks to do this?

Any help would be appreciated.

1. Carefully Pull Cup Holder Unit Out Centre Of Dash

1a. Push Slim Switch Panel out of dash from behind

2. Push Air Con Panel out of Dash from behind*

3. Push Lower Audio Unit out Dash From behind*

  • DO NOT USE A SCREW DRIVER TO PRISE THESE OUT OF THE DASH AS YOU WILL MARK THE FACIA PANELS
4. You shoud now see two small allen head grub screws just below upper audio unit if you look closely, unscrew these and this will release this unit

NB This is for an 02 car with a single CD but I think cars with a cassette are the same

Actually the tape unit is slightly different to the CD unit. The CD unit in the E39 is actually a two peice unit with multi information display, and is thus more complicated to remove.

The tape unit is a one peice unit and is very easy to remove - simply remove the volume control, and then use a screwdriver to turn the screw inside which releases a clip.

Then pull it out with your fingers in the tape player (I accept no responsbility for injury!).
