Can anyone give me an idea of cost to get a chassie, blasted, zinc coated, then powder coated.

Just so I have an Idea, there is a company near me what will do it, just want to know the aprox cost before asking them for a quote, so I don't look too shocked.

Thanks
Leigh

I think Neil Hyde had that done by RT and Hamish400 also had something similar done.

Can they do the insides also.

Would it be pointless unless it blasted inside.

It will be acid dipped, and that does remove rust very well, see my pod Light brackets post.

By zinc coated I assume that you mean sprayed since people shy away from hot dipped because of the distortion worries. I presume that the zinc would then have to be etched to make sure that the plastic coating gets a grip. I've not heard of anyone doing this process before. Based on various jobs of mine and friends I'd say: blasting £150, spraying £250, etching £100, powdercoating £250(hmmm?)

I would recommend that you consider powder coating and then painting with epoxy mastic:-

Good luck; I look forward to seeing your progress on the new Wedge pages, Jonathan

Well I was quoted £50 for doing 4 brackets as they said that was there min charge. Would have liked to do it as a test but could not wait the 2 weeks, so just got them to acid dip and bake them. they did come out good tho.

Also they will be doing the powder coating so I asume they will prep the Zinc before, but will ask also.

I'm going to get my front suspension done 1st as a trial.

Not sure if its zinc spray or dip. will ask. I think a lot of people are scare mongering about the dipping. if it is dipped I'll just make a mold before and re-check after, and make then strighten it if it not right.

I remember welding at the rear of the chassis on my first wedge (diff cracks) and a fire breaking out. The inside of the tube seemed to have some waxy grease in there and after a while it melted.

I'm not sure it would be a good idea to dip the whole chassis in a bath of hot zinc! All that stuff might catch fire.

Perhaps they can do cold zinc plating using electrolysis? You don't get as good a coating as hot dipping but if you're poweder coating etc afterwards it'll be good for another 20 years.

I would also try and fill the chassis with oil before the treatment starts to help prevent the ingress of any acid, it's the last thing you want lurking inside the tubes.

Well they bake everything they dip in acid to remove all the acid.

Hi Leigh,

I paid £350 to have my chassis blasted, zinc sprayed and then painted with 2 pack. I shyed away from powder coating as in my past experience it chips away and then it starts to flake off.

Lotus galvanised (or -zed) the Esprit chassis, I've no idea what technique was used but I've never heard of heat distortion being an issue. My Esprit was 21 years old and had scarcely any chassis corrosion... unlike my 390 which needed new sill plates after 15 years.

Thank you Pilo.

Sounds ok. may take it to your guy depends on how far he is and how much my guy quotes.
Bay be best to just get it Zinc coated and then use "epoxy-mastic" as JR's post.

£400 seem a bit dear for them to spray wax oil on your car.

Wax oil has many problems not least of all being sticky to fingers/clothes and washing off due to air suction so it's short term. Really only to be used where lack of access prevents the use of other methods.
