Cooling Sorted
Discussion
If any body is interested.
My early 4.3 had cr*p fans, it wasnt overheating badly, but no comfort zone.
Upon free & impartial advice from an independant specialist I just replaced fans with 'cowled' versions from Cerbie - cooling is sorted even with only 1 of the fans operational.
Still need to provide new relay / power supply to 2nd fan, and secondary thermoswitch. I also have the Cerbie rad to install.
I am pretty sure my thermostat is going to be asking for pay rise soon.

Excuse the long winded reply, but Heath Robinsons ghost has possessed me. The holy grail of fit & forget cooling system revision 1:
I wanted a 2 stage, split system, with manual overrides (easy to test switch failure with clean hands) and a fan run on when leaving the car. I considered also warning lights for fan running, but they now make a noise like the Ferrari used to - so I have an audible indicator instead!
Putting all this in without being sure the rad was perfect would be foolhardy. so I needed to ensure my rad was 10/10.
I took the opportunity to the rad modded to take a temp switch (personally agree with posts about measuring temp on rad). Then fan 2 will be controlled via existing system (otter / relay). In addition fan 1 will have its own fuse, relay and power supply controlled by the switch on the rad. (Spent too much time designing fault tolerant systems - obviously) In a quandry whether to mount near rad (take off from starter) or in fuse box location, I would love to know how to add relay into existing fuse box! currently have a Pig307 supplemental fuse relay holder (box) which protects fuel/ecu gubbins as well as stopping battery taking walks. I am looking now to find a temp switch for the rad with dual outputs (audi seem to use one) so that it will also back up otter switch.
The combination of thermostat and fan switch temperatures is being considered, but will be something like 74deg stat, Fan 1 85/82, fan 2 92/87.
In addition I will wire in fan override switches, and a timed run on after stopping for fan 2 (ooohhh capacitors, resistors and diodes). Looking also into provision of oil cooler. Currently researching water wetter and red coolant (doesnt break down with age apparantly). Nearly forgot - but will also add pretty coloured new hoses.
Well you did ask!
