I'm looking at a car currently which has a 1600 Fiat twin cam on twin 40's (from a 131 I think) everything appears to be sound, but it has a misfire at about 5000rpm. Any ideas what it might be? I know that covers a bit of broad spectrum, but any vague ideas what they're prone to? It's stood for about a year, although it has been run from time to time and apparently the plugs were cleaned before the last run.

Have you tried substituting the HT leads? Worn HT leads *could* create a fault such as this.

If you don't have spare HT leads and don't want to waste any cash, you could try (not saying this is a definitive test, mind you...) looking at the engine in a very dark place. If you can see any stray sparks, usually where lead meets connector at the cap, you'll know the leads are shot.

Oh yeah, very important: have you cleaned the carb jets? A small blockage could also create a fault at high revs.

Doh! Just wrote a long reply and a browser error wiped it!

Anyway.....

Good points! I haven't tried either of those because I haven't actually bought the car in question yet. I want to get an idea of what the worst thing the problem could be (on an other wise quiet, clean, apparently well kept engine)? And secondly, assuming I do buy it, one possibility is that I may have to go over to the over end of the country and drive it back, so trying to get an idea what easily portable spares would be worth taking to ensure I get back!

Oh, whilst I have the attention of some Fiat experts! The engine is a "1600cc twin running with a 5 speed Fiat 131 box", so presumably also out of a Fiat 131 itself, based on that can you identify which engine this would be?

If the good people of PH can't help you on the last question, I bet they can help you at the web's most tech-savvy forum for Fiat TC tuners: http://www.turbo124.com/forum/

Better have a double expresso before you start perusing the threads there - don't say I didn't warn you!

edit: I reckon the serial no. question will be basic fodder for the T124 tuners.
