Can anyone tell me what fuel i am supposed to be putting in my '89 350i? I have only just bought it and the guy said he only put leaded fuel in. Can this engine run on ordinary unleaded or does it need super unleaded? The engine is standard.

It will need super unleaded unless adjusted. See unleaded FAQ on my website for the whole story.

You should be able to run on unleaded but not every one can with out a good octane booster,

when i first got my 350i the guy i bought it off said to run on that red replacment crap, which i did on the first fill up, then i swopped to super unleaded and did suffer from pinking which turned out to be the weights in the dizz (in my case),then went to optimax and 8/9 BTDC and made a big difference coz the octane is higher, had top end rebuild and still on optimax and runs like a dream and still no sign off pinking, but some times i run on 95 ron unleaded and still have no problems,

But after all that you didn't say you where suffering from pinking so maybe this is no good to you what so ever

are you running the right plugs NGK B7ECS

Tony

PS since owning my 350i i have found my car doesn't run so well on super market petrol

Recommend Shell Optimax along with most other Tivvers - but if you need to go down the additive route try Castrol Valvemaster - used it in the Quattro for 15000 miles without problems.

Seems to be widely accepted that Shell Optimax is the best fuel there is now. I use it in my BMW540i religiously.

BP or major brand super unleaded is a worst case scenario for me. NEVER use supermarket fuel - its cheaper for good reason!

I've always used optimax since the engine was sorted out a few months ago - had no problems at all with pinking
