Volvo offer extreme test drives of their new 300bhp models
![]() |
Despite previous 'hot' models, Volvo still isn't a marque that you'd associate with very rapid machinery. That lack of recognition hasn't deterred them though and their latest model should get the blood pumping.
The new S60R and V70R models come with 300 bhp and can hit 60mph in less than six seconds as well as tow caravans.
To allow sampling of the cars at first hand, Volvo has arranged special public driving sessions at the Prodrive circuit in Warwickshire from 23rd June to 2nd July.
Professional racing drivers will be on hand to teach race and road driving skills, and show the cars’ capabilities. They will also demonstrate how the Comfort, Sport and Advanced Sport chassis settings can be selected at the touch of a button using Volvo’s ‘Four-C’ advanced chassis technology that adjust dampers and shock absorbers 500 times a second.
Customers who have already ordered an S60 R or V70 R have been offered a priority booking opportunity. However, places are still available from £95 by calling 0800 400 430 or by going to a dedicated website for the event, www.r-concept.co.uk, which also has an R-concept game to experience the cars on-line.
The trick suspension is really amazing. Its got that adjustable dampers thingy and if you have it on Comfort its fine if a little uncontrolled. Press the button for Advanced and the difference is noticable and dramatic - little movement in the dampers and everything tightens up - Ok, so the ride is rock solid now, but its instant and dramatic. Its different to see a car with this type of thing that you can actually feel the difference, rather than subjective changes that make little difference....
Can feel the 4-wheel drive too - plough into corners too fast and let the 4WD sort it out by powering out again... Nice
Oh, and the demo car they have is a strange blue (not to my taste but its OK), but the tan leather interior is 'orid - couple that with the blue dials (the R thing) and its a major clash.... us Brits can teach these Europeans a few things about colour combinations you know...
Cheers,
Paul
