Remote control plipper charging

One of the key's on my recently purchased X5 was didn't work and I was told that this must be because the key hadn't been used and therefore had lost all of its charge.

I have been using the dead key but it still isn't working - longest journey I have done with it is about an hour.

Should this be charging in this amount of time or might it need a longer charge?

apparently if they go dead the battery needs changing, according to the dealer i recently bought my car from he said to rotate using the keys so they all get charged regularly.

Noted in the owners manual that the keys each need using a couple of times a year - mine was a BMW managers car previously and they clearly don't bother about such things!
