Well I ordered them via my bank, commission free, but it took a day, local co-op travels, and places like that have it over the counter and if you know an OAP they usually get it commission free

Pretty much every where does it commission free nowadays - i just went to a bank with a bureau de change, handed the moolar over and got some back.

Be aware that if you try and pay by switch card to get cash back, you will need photo ID. If you just give them the cash they don't require anything.

If you have a cash point card with Cirrus or Maestro on it you can normally use it at any French cashpoint at a good exchange rate. Can normally find cashpoints the same as in UK, in banks and big supermarkets etc

I normally have about 50 quids worth to see me over there then top up at the nearest cashpoint. If you go into town on Friday, you can top up then too.
