The rear plates are special to TVR's being partially transparent. If you have purchased a normal plate it will not work.

You need to get a transparent/reflective plate - a standard one won't let any light through.

If you need to get a set of plates, I have used http://www.fancyplates.com/ successfully though I recommend telephoning your order through rather than using their website which can become a little complicated.

In addition, if you have one of the fastest colours, like Green, not a lot of light reaches the back of the plate so the nighttime visibility can be improved by lining the recess behind the numberplate with aluminium kitchen foil and gluing it to the recess.

Can recommend fancyplates too. I ordered through their website and no problems getting plate suitable for Chimaera

Paul, I don't have my bible to hand so can't remember what year it was that the plates changed. Mine is a '98 and has the more normal externally lit system - yours may be the same. Worth checking before you order new plates.

Yes, but you can easily tell. The early plates sit flush and are backlit...the later ones slant in at the top and have a light at the top in the gap created by this. Although as it's TVR no doubt there is some sort of strange intermediate form.

I also got mine from fancyplates. Easy to do online, when you spec up the plate there is a TVR option on one of the drop down menus, that will get you the translucent rear.

I think it changed around the time the rear light changed to the separate circular ones. Mine's a May '98 with the revised lights and externally lit slanting plate but I know someone with a March '98 which has the old style rear. So probably the change was around April. Nick.

Mine's a 97 buld registered Jan 98. That has a backlit plate.

I had considered the tin foil thing aswell, but I don't use mine in the dark much so haven't bothered.

Havnt bothered with mine. Put washers behind the screws so the MOT examiner could see the lights, passed no problem.
