Power steering conversion.........
Discussion
I am interested in converting my '97 500 to power steering. Searching through the threads one idea that pops up from time to time is the possibility of using the Vauxhall Corsa electric column rather than the virtually unobtainable TVR hydraulic rack.
Queries that come to mind and aren't answered (as far as I can see in the threads) are -
1)Is the Corsa column interchangeable as far as mountings and overall size are concerned?
2) Will the switchgear and steering wheel fit?
3) Is there room, bearing in mind the motor sticking out of the side of the column?
4) Is the bodywork likely to be strong enough to withstand the reaction of the motor on the outer column against the forces on the inner column?
Has anyone actually done this conversion? Any information would be welcome.

Have the bits in my garage to start but have not found the time to make a startQueries that come to mind and aren't answered (as far as I can see in the threads) are -

Have one of these as well, which I reckon makes sense

I'd have said being as the normal column mounts have to handle teh steering effort in any case it won't make any difference its you or a motor doing the work.
The biggest thing is will it fit as Corsa's tend to have more room under the dsah and will the bottom spline match the existing one (you might be lucky)
Carry on I'd say, sounds like a good idea you could even make it speed sensitive

In a non-PAS setup the torque reaction is taken out via your arms and the column mounts don't have any torque applied; in a powered column PAS setup the torque would be reacted against the column mounts. Thanks for your replies everyone. What I was hoping was that someone had actually done this conversion in the past and could point me in the right direction. There are so many threads from people saying they would like to convert to PAS that I would have thought it might have been worthwhile for an engineering company to produce a kit, perhaps adapting the electric motor onto the actual TVR column.
I'm also considering this upgrade, also have questions. Does the Corsa rack fit and how easy is it to deal with the wiring issues??
My reason for chosing PAS is dealing with wild reactions of the backside....when the car is being driven hard. Hydraulic version is hard to get and this electric pas option is not that expensive what makes it interesting.

Just to point out.My reason for chosing PAS is dealing with wild reactions of the backside....when the car is being driven hard. Hydraulic version is hard to get and this electric pas option is not that expensive what makes it interesting.
Its not a rack thats changed, its the steering column which on the Corsa uses an electric motor to assist the twisting of the shaft.

I'm looking to buy a Griff. with PAS but most within my budget are without, plus I have read that the power rack can give problems, leaks etc. The electric motor driving the column looks to be the ideal solution, better still if the Corsa one can be made to fit. The comment from Green V8S does throw a spanner in the works and has anybody an idea of the cost.
