I've just spent the last two hours hacking off the silencer from the rest of the exhaust as the internal rattle it gives out when hot has become unbearable (my hammer job worked for a bit but it was nevr going to be a permanent 'fix' smash). Having removed it I've noticed a couple of things:

1. There is a small amount of rust around the chassis at the rear sitting under the silencer. Is this normal and is there an easy way to get rid of it and keep the rust at bay in the future.

2. The heat shield under the silencer is all but burned away. I remember reading somewhere that the heat shield material is reasonably cheap. Probably worth doing that while the box is out, so where can i get this from?

3. Is it possible to source a new silencer easily? Are there any cheap alternative options to that particular silencer? I'm not too bothered about performance increases as I'm only a road driver. Or is it worth binning the whle system and getting a new one? Rousch sounds great on paper but I'm tied down currently by wifey-type monetary constraints (she wants a people carrier confused and I'm holding out using the 'maybe next year' type of argument).

4. Are there any environmental/mechanical issues that would be caused by driving it without the silencer for a bit? I'm pretty sure the cats are not part of the silencer box (forgive my ignorance if that sounds daft :smilesmile as when I run the car the rear is splattered with a bit of water, which I'm guessing is a cat by-product.

Sorry for the array of questions but any help any of you can offer would be greatly appreciated.

Mine's a 3 - are you saying that in the last photo that's the same exhaust?
Looks like quite a neat job. My exhaust system really lets down the look the engine bay.

How many years did it take to get that diffuser off?

Oh btw, What does 2packed mean paperbag?

Does the covering reduce the amount of heat emitted by the exhaust?

Hi mate,

It is quite common for the bars to get surface rust under the exhaust (Due to the extreme heat). I did what was already advised and repainted mine then covered them in cooltec heat shield.

The foil sheet for the diffuser was from Noble and cost me £30. It takes while to get the diffuser off due to the amount of screws that have rusted in. It's worth greasing each one (Boring I know) before putting new ones in.

Some people wrap their exhuast's up, which not only tidys the bay up it reduces heat.

Good luck.

yeah same exhaust just taken off and 2000degee painted.the diffuser as said above has lots of screws but came off no probs .i used new stainless screws with a dot of copper grease when reassembling.2pack paint is a paint with a hardener added .the paint you get in aerosols is a single pack that hardens on contact with atmosphere.i work on oil refineries and the alloy foil is used to lag very hot pipework

Cool. Thanks for all the tips. My next question was what to replace the screws with on the diffuser, bt you've answered that. One more thing, to remove the silencer I had to cut through the 3 bolts holding the join together (parts had rusted to point of almost being unrecognisable). Can I replace them with any similar type bolts or do they need to be a specific type?

I'm in a similar state of play - baffles rattling (seems better when hot) and need to replace back box? My space frame? is not just rusted, the cross-sectioned hollow bars directly under the exhaust have almost totally corroded away. If I remove the diffuser and back box, should have adequate room to cut out corroded sections and weld in new ones. Is it just bog standard mild steel or some special Lada 'quick rust' components? All advice gratefully received. Cheers

Being a bit of an engine tart myself I cant help admire what youve done with all the hoses.

Very impressive. It's good to see that I'm not the only sad git cleaning under the rear clam.

I've now done the majority of the work. The exhaust paint made the whole thing look miles better. Took me ages and a lot of swearing to get the diffuser off and I still need to remove the shafts of three screws I couldn't get off without bashing the heads off (smash my forte!).

Still got the silencer out but I needed to drive it yesterday (well it wasn't raining was it?) so I just stuck the tailpipe on the stub of the exhaust with it pointing diagonally downwards through the chassis where the diffuser used to cover. OMG it's loud.

It sounds really throaty like a TVR at idle and low revs but it builds into this massive barrage of noise at around 3.5K and doesn't let up. It's tiring, looks crap from the back without the diffuser and the pipe poking slightly out of the bottom, it's unsociably noisy and caused me a headache yesterday. But it does seem a bit quicker (might well be psychological) and the silencer doesn't rattle any more. Hmmmmm....
