330D advice please

Hi BMW experts
Looking for something sensible to replace my 968CS with, and the 330D Touring fits the bill.
Currently looking for a mint manual M sport, that's been loved from day 1. I've never owned a BM before and could do with your advice:
Is there any spec that I should avoid, or 'must have' options when it comes to selling?
Am I right in thinking there are 3 states of tune, 185 (up to 03), 210 bhp (up to latest shape) then 230 (current model)?
Is the new shape a noticeable hike in ability over the old E46 (which I prefer the look of!)- ideally I don't want to spend over 22K for a minter.
Should a manual go for less than an auto; I'm having trouble locating one
