For all those who have commented on a recent thread that the police are often not on the way anywhere important I was dam gald they got there quickly last night when I left my wife and new born baby upstairs to investigate a noise to find some chap downstairs (who had entered through a window) trying to find a way to let his two mates who were waiting round the back of the house in. 2 marked cars, 2 unmarked cars and about 12 officers arrived within 2 minutes of making the 999 call. Thanks guys.

Nope - I went downstairs on hearing the noise (and retreated pretty dam quickly when I realised there was three of them). However this was (thankfully) enough to scare them off and they had gone when police arrived. They did have a good look around and promised to drive around to see if they could find them. I suspect I would have heard had they done so.

Thanks

Certainly was scary. It's the second time I've heard a noise, gone down stairs to prove to myself that there is no one there and then had the moment of realisation when you realise that there actually is someone in the room with you. It's not nice at all.

My wife is very upset. I had to ring my parents this morning and ask them to drive down from North Yorkshire early this morning so that she wouldn't have to be alone at any point today such is the state she is in. I also know that she won't sleep for ages now. However could have been much much worse.

frown Has wife got friends locally... or friendly neighbours? I used to get v spooked at being at home on my own when I was younger so I used to go out to museums/art gallery during the day and then meet my dad and travel home together, that might work for your missus too.

Police may be able to help with installing a care-alarm panic button system, too - I've got one. If you get spooked you press the button, it rings the callcentre who listen and a) talk to you to see if you're OK or b) call the police, depending on what they can hear.

Thanks. Yes she got loads of mates and I strongly suspect that a bottle of wine or two and she'll be a bit calmer. We're pretty secure anyway but am going to look at panic buttons, CCTV, etc, (and large German Shepard dogs).

Send a message to Gorvid and ask about his dogs!

Take up clay pidgeon shooting. It's a real good sport, lots of fun and helps to build up accuracy with a shotgun.

These shotguns require regular cleaning to maintain them. Who knows - perhaps next time Mr Intruder will come face to face with Mr Shotgun. That puts the ball in your court - he makes a move, blow him to kingdom come.

After all, you were just cleaning it at the time and when they burst into your home shouting the odds; the gun was the first thing to hand to defend yourself with. You were in serious fear of your life due to them looking like [insert usual terrorist/nutter description here] and you thought they had a gun and were going to use it.

Remember lethal force is perfectly acceptable form of defence, provided you can justify it.

Don't think "Tony Martin" here, for that was completely different (he shot a kid in the back as he was running away. Therefore, murder, not self defence).

Unfortunately my 19 yr old is pretty scared of burglers at night as we were burgled at night when she was a young teenager. Sadly she associates it with home and wont stay the night there alone. This is even though we have moved home since the burglary.
