i like thundercats mate, think they are ok. for your first bike i would think that its a good choice. have a good look at it and make sure itis all ok, if so get it, keep it for a year or so then upgrade to something a bit newer.

Hi, there´s nothing wrong with the ´cat at all, great first big bike, after a 125 it will feel like a rocketship, and they are really, capable of about 160mph but has a nice tractable engine with decent midrange, very comfy too.

Recommended from me, good luck with your test smile

Good choice of first bike. Comfy and fast (but not intimidatingly so). Just make sure the exhaust isn't rotten. Also, knock him down to about £15-1600.

I've been offered an extremely clean '97 by a colleague, with about 13000 miles on it. I was considering using it as a commuter.

It has had the exhaust replaced and he was offered 1000-1200 by a dealer. When I mentioned about 1500 his eyes lit up.

Have a scan on Autotrader and Fleabay. They don't go for much. There is a tidy black '98 for £1500 with 26K on the clock.

Good choice the Cat, sometimes regret chopping mine last year. Check front calipers for sticking, prone to sieze if the bikes used a lot or not. 2nd gear is a known weakness and fails by jumping out if the bikes been abused. Had mine for 4 years from new. pxed it for 3k with 12000 on the clock

On a similar note... I'm doing my DAS this week, ( great fun so far, CBT today in the Sun smile and then 2 days of fun on a 500 before the test on Friday... redface ), and been offered various bikes from people at work.

One of which is a 96 P Thundercat, 11,000 miles, but no MOT and not ridden for the past 2 years since it was MOTd ! Although it has lived in his garage.

The guy wants £1000 for it, and will get it MOTd first, but should I even be considering it ?
As a bike type it seems to fit my needs, and I like the general look...but..
Everyone I've mentioned it to so far has done a lot of teeth sucking as its been stood for so long etc.

I'm definitely going to have a look, but what should I be looking for ??

I was thinking if there are no serious horror stories, (apparently the fairing has been 'scuffed') ,then I'd get it serviced, and it would make a good commuter for my first year, then chop it in for something newer next year...

What do people think, the alternative seems to be a £1500ish Bandit,( been offered what looks like a straight condition 2000 W plate bandit S for £1600 ), or just go mad and get a new bandit or SV650s on the basis it will be new and I'll know its history etc..

Guess I'm also thinking the summer is getting on a bit, so maybe a 'new, new' bike isnt such a good move..

Soo, any opinions ?

Get your mate to start the bike up. See if the exhaust is oily - if so could be piston rings. That is a fair time for an engine to stay idle.

After two years, I'd expect to replace both tyres - unless it had been stored on paddock stands, off the ground. You ought to budget for tyres anyway IMO.

Cheers smile

Any idea how much tyres would be, ballpark ?
And even where you'd get them from / fitted ? Not kwikfit I take it..
I'm definitely finding a lot of this bike stuff very new to me..

But realistically I guess assuming the bike is fundamentally sound, that I must be looking at £1500 by the time the tyres, battery and a service are sorted ?

Sounds about right. You could well find a deal for less depending on brand.

Battery would be about £50
