If I can't afford an early 996, and wifebeast won't allow an XJR8, I quite fancy the looks of the Allroad.

Trouble is, I have heard lots of stories about sh!tty Audi built quality and poor reliability. I see they don't do well in customer satisfaction surveys either. I had a golf until this year and it was rubbish and the dealers were completely hopeless. I would never get another VW - I'm guessing Audi will be the same.

So are Audi's completely rubbish? Will an Allroad p!ss me off? confused

I've had a 2004 Allroad for two years. faultless. Best car I've owned in terms of real-life practicality for today's road and driving conditions. Feels like it will last 100 years. I don't understand how a relatively slow family estate can figure on a shortlist of someone looking at fast 2+2 sports coupes.

Ah well... if funds permit I will get the 996. If not, then I really fancy an 01 XJR8, but missus says she won't get in it. Hmm... idea

Anyway, the Allroad is instead of the XJR8. Saw one thundering down the motorway at the weekend and it looked pretty cool cool ... then again, maybe it would be too slow... what's the 0-60 in the 2.5 diesel, about 9 seconds?

Aren't those VAG turbodiesel's ripe for chipping?

And isn't it the case that pre-95's are better than post-95s? If so, then it may be out of warranty anyway...

Maybe I should just give the wife a slap and get the 996 anyway - now THAT'S feminism in action.biggrin

Rob - any idea what the 2.5 diesel can be re-mapped to?

About 230bhp, beyond that I think you're into dodgy territory. Of course you've got stacks of torque but like all diesels it's in a fairly narrow band, there nothing below or above it.

I've a such an AllRoad and it's a really useful piece of kit. The old just-replaced style is reckoned (by some) to be a better car than the newer version, being beefed up body strength-wise as well as having the adjustable ride height. Not as economical as you might expect, about 32mpg on a long run, but that said it never goes below 27mpg (average). Build quality good-ish, not up to the glory days of the early '90s.

Superchips say 20bhp - brings it to 200bhp. 0-60 on the standard 2.5 diesel is given as 9.5... so maybe chipping could take a second off...?

Isn't there a 2.7 petrol? Can't find any for sale, presumably everyone buys the diesel?

Sorry guys, I meant the 2.7tt can produce an alarming amount of power.

As it happens I know of a couple of guys with diesel allroads and although they areant the quickest off the line they have bags of torque in the midrange. smile

Um .. the diesel isn't about 0-60 times. It's about low-rev tree-stump-pulling grunt in the mid-range. It's wha you need to tow or carry a heavy load. If you enjoy revving the nuts off and winning traffic light grand prix stay well away from an oil-burner. My 2.5TDI will however thunder down the motorway and cruise quite comfortably at 100 mph (on a German autobahn only of course).

Surely you're up for the 2.7tt petrol if you're otherwise looking at turbo pork or the jet powered gentleman's club? Get one a few years old, then pop down to MRC with a few grand in your back pocket for a K04/fuelling/exhaust/remap bonanza.

Stick a diesel badge on the back and you've got something very very stealth.

In my experience VW/Audi diesels have a particularly narrow power band. I have just changed from a fiat 1.9 diesel powered car to a VW 2.0l diesel powered car and in all respects apart from power the VW engine is crap compared to the Fiat engine. It is noisy and rough, does bugger all below 2.5 k revs and it is all over by 4k, tbh it spoils the whole car.

Does the 2.7 actually exist? I've only ever seen 2.5 diesels... depreciation must scare folks off the 2.7...

Yes lots of power whenever you want it. Pulling out hard in first is ridiculous. Yes lots of petrol, oh yes. Brakes are alose expensive when the go, and tires....

Is yours standard or tuned? As tuned these can run very impressive power figures.

Regarding being thirsty, I'm sure if you were that worried about fuel consumption that the 996 would be out of the question anyway? Then again I seem to get worse fuel consumption in my S2 than a friend in his 996 turbo!! frown
