My trusty Volvo 850 graunches when I change into third gear if I don't let the revs drop before I change. It's only third gear that's affected and it happens when I change up or down the box. It's not generally a problem unless I want to change into third rapidly.

I have a gut feeling some of the dogs from third gear are probably swimming around in the bottom of the gearbox weeping

Can anyone think of another reason for one gear to be affected? It simply doesn't warrant a strip down just to replace a single gear and even if I was to do it the chances are I'll merely accelerate wear on the other gears.

2nd and 3rd get the most use (under power / fast changes) so are the first to show wear. In my experience its 2nd that gives up before the others.

Ya, the synchronizer for that gear is shot. The Gear itself is probably fine, unless you've gotten ham fisted with it.

Ahem, not me nonobiggrin I bought her with >176K on the clock.

My gut feel is the dogs are missing from the side of the gear but all the teeth are still intact. Just wondered if there was an easy fix I could be missing.

No need to DD, she'll change quite happily as long as I don't rush second to third.

Sometimes an oil change to a good quality oil suitable for that gearbox, can work wonders.

I know Castrol Syntrax works wonders on Subaru boxes....although its not to say its ideal for other cars.

Worth a shot though.
