According to the speedo I was doing 170mph! Not bad for a 2.5 eh!

The reality of couse is somewhat different (but you knew that!)

I was actually doing about 40mph when suddenly the speedo went crazy. I was in traffic and everytime I stopped it went back to zero, but as soon as I started moving again it spun instantly round to 100 and fluctuated at anything between 80 and 170 until I stopped again.

Anyone ever experienced anything like this before?

Will be a dodgy connection on the gearbox(sensor)

Usually dodgy connection, usually water ingress. Find the sensor, take the connectors apart and spray WD40 or similar.

Rarely it could be the speedo unit, but try the sensor cable first.
