Currently running a dull as ditchwater VW Passat TDI sport which is pretty quick, does 50mpg and costs nowt to run, but I hate it.

I need an estate for the hounds and will have 4.5k max after I get rid of the VW and have pretty much decided on a Legacy Estate, the jap import 280bhp manual version.

I'm aware the MPG is going to be half of the VW, at most, and the ins will be a bit more but are there any other major reasons why I shouldn't get one or are they pretty much bombproof??

18....eek....I'd expect that from the Auto but is the manual just as bad? I was expecting between 20-25.

The wife won't like that, will have to lie about that bit.

A mate has a '97 GT (260 bhp compared to the GTB's 280) - when just cruising, long runs etc it will do over 30 mpg without much trouble. In fact just gently cruising at 60-70 mph its not really that much worse than my NA Legacy. Its when in traffic, getting heavy with the right foot or cruising at speeds a bit higher (ie 80+ mph) that it starts to guzzle the juice a bit.

The autos are much much worse though, as well as being slower.

And here I am again to bang the Legnum VR-4 drum once more, might be another option if your going down the 'cheap to buy, costly to run fast Jap estate' road though.

If this wasn't an Auto I'd be over there at the weekend...only in york as well....bloody bugger. http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/229219.htm

I assume the Legnum would be even worse on petrol due to being a bit heavier??
Lovely looking cars. Are they really that much of a financial liability or is it just cos they like a drink?
Also how do they compare to the Subaru?

i know its a silly question, but would a BMW 540i Touring actually get better real world mileage?

Personally i love the jap turbowagons, its just a shame they are 90% autos...

Probably not far off at all. I had an E39 528 touring auto a few months back and that was reading 21-22mpg! My Mon-Fri driving is virtually all stop start at the mo.

I love e39's but they're not really that chuckable, much more wafty. I want something I can throw round corners a bit.

I've got one the rare Vr4 manuals.. There are a few about, usually that sort of money too.. i looked at the legacy but the Mitsubishi seemed better put together, much smoother and arguably better looking..

I get AVERAGE 21 mpg, mostly in London traffic too.. !!

Bet he thinks the odometr is in miles not KM!!! 30km per gallon would be about right!! 30km = 18mpg wink

I can live with that when the trade off is a properly quick car. The e39 wasn't "fast" or chuckable, but still cost a lot in petrol.

I've just been doing some reading and it seems like they're pretty solid but are very expensive if key items explode, such as the rear dif.....2.5k !!! That's a bit much.

I've put a request in to the seller of the car pictured above as to the possibility of getting one sourced from Japan. Manuals don't seem to exist over here at all.

Is your's an estate and what's your experience of it been like so far? Cheers

if you want something REALLY wierd there's a Mitsubishi Resort Runner for sale near me...

its a Space Wagon (yes, the wierd little minivan) with Evo III engine and AWD gear :P

bizarre japanese

btw im not sure the Legnum/Legacy are exactly that "chuckable"...grunt and grip, but weight + awd = understeer.

would the dogs fit in a 5 door WRX?

I'd recommend the VR4, been very happy with mine, there's a great owners club for tech support, and they seem pretty tough as long as they're serviced regularly. The main Rear diff issue is the AYC active system same as the EVO, (it can actually be interchanged with evo item, £500 second hand if it goes, which it shouldn't) needs the oils changing regularly, and the turbos mean 4500 service intervals. well worth it as it's a great handling car, not much will keep up in the wet particularly.
Yes, mines an estate (legnum) and serves me well for work and play, I also looked into 5 series BMW tourings, and couldn't find any without ridiculous mileage, good condition and options for what the VR4 cost.

I'd agree with that, Legnums are fast and have loads of grip, but they are far from chuckable, you do know your in a big car, it just depends how much bottle you've got.

As Stu says, 4500k service intervals but that's only the engine oil and filter. Diff oil needs doing on a yearly basis aswell as gearbox oil if you have an auto and everything else is pretty much 5 years or 60,000 miles.

Eurospec2000 have a service price guide which will give you a rough idea on servicing requirements - http://www.eurospec2000.co.uk/Mitsubishi/Galant/

WRX Sportwagon is as chuckable as the 4dr version, and handles better due to the extra bulkhead at the rear = stiffer body. Only real performance difference is the 0-60 at .1sec slower although they have the same top end. Big enough to get your dog in the back and wife + 2 kids + gear, in relative comfort. Totally reliable!! smile

The legacy though is cavernous inside and for such a big car it handles extremely well, as well as being a good looker for an estate. All the reviews i have ever read about them speak very highly of them being such a capable machine in every way, however the only drawback to owning one seems to be....fuel economy....there is none hehe

Good point, been doing some proper looking and I think an Imp would be the way to go.

What power would this model year have?

Thats a 1998 UK spec. Looks nice

Could someone do me a favour a post a pic of the boot space or confirm I can fit 2 springer spaniels in the back.

Cheers.

Early ones were 208, later ones 215, can't remember when they switched over though.
