Driver door has a kind of its own!!!

My driver side door has started to become slightly erratic in its behaviousr in the last few days. When opening it the window slides all the way down and then takes about another 10 seconds to open. Once you have left the car and beep it to lock it, the door only partially slides up and you have to really close it from the passenger side prior to locking up. The car is a 51 Tuscan S.
Anybody able to throw some ideas as to what it might be would be gratefully appreciated, as I need to leave for work at 3 tomorrow morning!!

Hi Alan,
There are lots of previous threads about door/window issues with the Tuscan - do a quick search mate and you'll see some of the replies and advice.
As a quick overview, the window motor has a small PCB (encoder) fitted to it (inside the door card assembly) which sends signals to the door ECU (one for each door) which are fitted underneath the centre console (near the ashtray). The encoder PCB's can get affected by moisture/water and fail, the ECU's can fail and the wire/loom and connections can become corroded preventing good signals getting back to the ECU.
The easiest thing to do first is take the centre console off and swap over the ECU's. If the fault moves to the passenger door then you know it is the ECU that is causing the problem. If not, then it is likely to be the encoder PCB. You need to take off the door card (few screws inside the door pocket and lift/slide the card out) and check the encoder PCB and its connections to the door loom. Replacement PCB's can be got from most dealers or the likes of Clever Trevor.

an excellent summary by Andy but there is one more possibility.
The door shut catch contains a small microswitch. This is behind the chrome plate. The allen key bolts holding the door shut mechanism in place can come loose causing this microswitch to not signal the door is shut.

Thats brilliant. Thanks very much for that. I'm going to try the ECU's quickly, but have managed to get another car for using just now. Not as much fun, but at least I will be able to shut the windows properly.
Will get a look when I get back. One thing I have noticed though is the compression gland on the wire loom at the door hinge has become loose, so will also have a check to make sure all the connections are ok.

Bit drastic to have to take another car instead! u can always try:
(i) closing the driver's window from the passenger side prior to locking car and that's fine, as you casually look as if you are getting something from the car......and oh, might as well close the window whilst at it sort of thing!
(ii) pressing the alarming keyfob a few times can usually render the window closed from it's half way position. Just double checking that all is locked when the window finally gets up to the top! (at least that has worked for me when the irratic nature of the PCB encoder is playing up!...I myself have not got around to changing the thing....too busy driving the thing!

Bought it, so I wouldn't have to put the miles on the tuscan and so I enjoy it more when I get a shot of it. Had planned to get something for a month or so.
The only reason I am worried about the window is that i put it in a secure car park which is external and when they park the car I want to make sure no moisture gets into the car while I am offshore. The first time I left it there, it seamingly took them about half an hour to get the guy out the car, plus the sea air can't be good for the discs for that period of time sitting idle!
