Just wondering what real-world mpg people get out of these things? Found a bargain-one today, but suspected the fuel costs would even the bargain price out!

That'll do - it's about average.

cant seem to get mine above 15 mpg around town (2001 3.0 sport auto) not had it on a long run yet but would hope for a bit more,we dont do many miles maybe 6-7k per year so dont really mind, really should have bought a 4.4 v8 for the difference in mpg

IMHO, I would not get a 3.0 Petrol, as the slight penalty at the pumps for a 4.4i or something is negligable.

Never had one myself, but my mates returned between 15 and 20 mpg. I reckon a 4.4i wont be much worse mpg wise, but you get the extra power.

Then of course theres servicing etc

Never got mine above 17mpg, mainly around town. When driving over distances got occasional bursts up 23mpg, but rapidly back below 17 when started pootling around town again.
Loved the car, but would get a deisel if getting another

My 2p: Don't worry about that, just get a V8 with LPG.

I have no idea about the consumption figures but another 2p worth: I got 25mpg overall average on my 330i saloon so the 3.0 X5 should be a lot less.

4p please sir..

Get the S in either 4.6 or 4.8. They use a rebadged Alpina engine from the B10. That should make you smile even when its turned off!

I've got a 4.8 arriving on Wednesday. Can't wait.

Who gives a sh!t about mpg unless your racking up huge mileage per annum ?

exactly, my 530 gets about 22 around town, but only do 6-7k pe year and when you work it out it makes no difference. Unless you are a high mileage user the extra cost of a diesel takes a couple of years to pay off.

I agree however dont forget you get more for your diesel when you sell it on. In fact some diesels are so expensive it makes me wander what people are thinking.

I know a guy who recently bought an A4 1.9 tdi 1998 for £4500. I knew where there was a 2.8 v6 5v 4x4 auto leather avant for £2500 and he said no.
