I'm interested in doing some 1/4 mile runs and, as you may already know, there are two "strips" close to the Midlands where you can turn up and "run what you brung". No noise limits, very cheap entry (£30) & fun guaranteed ! thumbup

Stratford on Avon next's weekend is Sept 29th/30th (70 miles from Telford). Am heading there on the 13th to see how it works and watch some of the really fast motors in action. Then will be there on the 29th in my GTR. driving

There is also Santa Pod - same sort of set up but further away (100 miles from Telford).

Has anyone been to either strip ? And do you know of any other 1/4 mile strips where you can RWYB ?

Lastly, I want to get some decent in car and out of car video footage of my runs / missed gearchanges / crashes etc. Does anyone know where I can get hold of some easy to attach cameras that will mate up to a standard digital camcorder ? LuckyP - how does your set up work ?

Kyle / Russell / Dave - you on for a drag strip head to head ?

Regards

Tony.

I'm still exploring AV gear, and I keep coming back to Minitape camcorders for the mix of ease of use and sound clarity. The best bit of kit that I've chanced upon for hold a 'std' 'corder is this:

Bollx - it's not there anymore.......was on:

http://www.motorsportcameras.co.uk/index.php?cPath...

it was a roll cage mount with ball and sockets to articulate the thread into the base of the camera....give them a call.

Cheers Pete, will give them a bell.

Will also post my times up after my run at Stratford, warts 'n' all ! Hoping for a sub 11 but that might only be possible with a decent driver in the car. Your 0.1 reaction time will be nigh on impossible to match ! bow

Hi Tony

I have just spoken to dave (can am) and i believe he and Russ are off to Santa Pod this weekend??? It may be worth giving them a bell.

I dont have enough confidence in my engine to start nailing it!!! I will be up for it next year for sure!!! I will be doing some major engine work this winter (im still mulling it all over) i will then be in a position to GO FOR IT.

Give me a bell when you get a chance buddy i have been finding a lot out about American Speed which i dont want to talk about on an open forum!!!

I have done SantaPod twice.

Kyle - Are you the Kyle that was down for RAF Marham on Sunday, if so what happened?

LuckyP - Very good ET, mine was 12.15s but with a speed of 122.6mph. I struggled to get of the 'line' every time.

My GTR straight though exhaust, 400ish horse power best time (Starting in 1st or second gear made no difference in the time) 11.89 at 120mph... (Stock Turbo 6 speed gearbox)

PS Andy Can-Am was in the other lane.... his best time I think was 11.3 with 470bhp (Stock turbo 4 Speed)

The 'Standard Digital Camcorder' is the stumbling block. Most do not have an AV input.
I have just bought a Sony Handycam DCR-HC96E which is a 2006 model. All the domestic Sony 2007 models do not have AV in.
I also bought a 'Dogcam' bullet camera and mic that plugs into the camcorder.
The dogcam can be stuck onto the outside of the car with rubber stickers.

When I get my head round how to use it all expect some oddball shots from wheel arches and inside front clip type shots that make you feel sick to watch.

Hi Russ / Dave / Kyle,

Is there a RWYB at Santa Pod this Sat ? The web site says 22nd Sept, with European drag racing this weekend. But if there is something on then I will try and be there !! Am itching for a blast.

Kyle, will give you a call later about AS ... sounds ominous !!

Thanks for all the time postings - looks like the current low ET to beat is 11.6s & vmax 124mph.

Hi Tony

It's the world finals at Santa Pod this weekend. No RWYB! I'm just going to watch and will not be taking the Can-Am. I've changed the injectors (now 65lb/hr) and I am mapping the engine on the 15th. I hope to drive the Can-Am to the Donington show on the 16th. I'm trying to resolve a heatsoak problem at the moment. The manifold air temps are getting too high and are sapping power. Russ is not going to the Pod this weekend. I won't be doing and track work in my car till next year. I'm waiting till I reach my target power level of over 600bhp.

My best ET is 8.98 at 158mph!

But that was a long time ago and not in an Ultima.

Let me know when your going and I'll come along for support!

Regards Dave

I believe GTRClive ran an 11.23 in Simon's GTR with one of our 500 horsepower 383's with no LSD & a six speed some years ago, so a good peddler is obviously the first requirement for good ET's!

Hi Dave,

I should be going on Sat 29th to Stratford - I'll give you a shout if you want to pop down with me ? And what on earth were you in to clock a sub 9s run ?!?

Having a few niggles of my own at the mo - X11GTR back at the Factory. They are sorting out that squeak I had on the clutch. Yesterday they had solved it but then found that the clutch was slipping in gear. Gearbox out twice so far. It may be something to do with my crankshaft being slightly longer than normal, they've already had to shave the adaptor plate but it's a tricky one.

Glad to announce that Ultima are sorting this out for free as they noticed the squeak on the pre SVA once-over. Nice one guys - much appreciated !!

Looks like 11.2 is the fastest time so far on the 1/4 mile (excluding, or course, the 9.9s run Richard did in the factory 720 !). Will be a good test for the clutch and 'box post Ultima's adjustments !

I have to do this but I'm shaving a tad off the flywheel rear instead. Mind you this is to sort a starter engagement issue.

Glad to say that Ultima have sorted the gearbox; just some grease on the clutch which was causing the slipping.

Had fun on the M6 toll coming out of the Toll Booth - you know the one - about 12 lanes wide with a 1/4 mile run before it joins back to 3 lanes. Had a Porsche 911 on my left and couldn't resist the chance to give it full beans. Left the porker for dead. Those rears have great traction. cool

Kyle & Dave, will call nearer the time but the 29th is a def. thumbup

PS - Kyle, did you get your valve lash sorted ?

Dear All,

Can't now make the 29th, something has come up on the 28th which is a late one. But can make the Sun 30th ? Is this still okay for you guys ? I will be there either way as I feel the need for speed !

Got the in car footage sorted care of Skippy from Demon Tweaks (Dave, he knows you and your Can Am very well !). £ 600 of gear and it works very very well. Excellent resolution, enough to show flies hitting the windscreen and the speedo and tacho at the same time. Totally addictive fun.

Roll on Stratford upon Avon !
