Eyup,

My mate has just become the proud owner of an ex military 1987 90 (or should that be Ninety)
When I say my mate, that really is my mate, not my friend but really me but I don't want to admit to it hehe

Its odd how similar-but-different it is to my Ninety of the same vintage so we've got a few questions

Is it normal for these to have a dinky little door type key for the ignition instead of the big black coated British Leyland type?

He has no 'normal' light switch like I have, but has a 6 way thing in the middle of the dash. Can someone tell me what each of these positions does please and if its normal for the headlights to be on without the sides when the switch is fully in the left position - this is the only place we can find that actually operates the headlights.

Oh, while I think about it, he's also got what looks like a choke by attached to the bulkhead by his left foot. Since its a NA diesel I guess this isn't really a choke but something to keep the engine revs up for some reason while the driver is out of the vehicle. Why would you want to do that though, it doesn't look like there has been a winch or anything attached.

One last thing (for now at least), the battery looks 12v and is in the usual place, does this mean the vehicle has been converted to 12v or is there something else I should be looking for - another battery maybe.
I suppose we could pull a bulb out and check if its 12v or 24v couldn't we?

Thanks
IanB

The six way light switch is standard feature on all military spec LR,s.I sthe tag above the switch worn out?(preventing you from seeing whats on)?Fully to the left should give you head,side,tail lights.Then working back in give s you the option to have various lights on as you wish.

24 volt LR,s have a huge alternator four times the size of a normal one.Check there first.

Thanks BLUETHUNDER. We'll spot the alternator easily enough then hehe

The switch has the little plate next to it the same as the one on the link below. Trouble is we don't have a chuffing clue what all the cryptic clues mean biggrin

OK, I'm going to have a stab at this.
H = Headlight
S = Sidelight
T = Tail
Conv = Convoy - is that the one which lights up the diff?
S.Conv therefore would be Sidelights and Convoy light.

Any of that right?

Oh, I've remembered something else. He has hard panels at the back and no side windows, and on each side practically in the middle of each panel is a 1" rubber grommet and a smaller disk rivetted in right next to it. Any ideas what was there?

You have it right with the lights.Convoy should light up a small light fitted under the the rear floor.This is mounted on a plate directly over the diff.The small holes you say you have on the side(without seeing pics)But sounds like the fitment for radio anntenae.These would normally be mounted on posts up the side off the vehicle with the lead running through the grommits you describe.Radio,s would have only been fitted on 24v FFR(fitted for radio)vehicles.Or it could just be that you have a radio hard top on a G.S (general service)vehicle.Its not unusual for things to be swapped over in the military.Depending on whats available at the time.Some pics would help though.thumbup

Thanks again BLUETHUNDER.
I go on holiday tomorrow so won't be able to get photos and get them up here.
I'm am going to see if Adam will convert to the darkside and become a PH'er so hopefully he might. If not, I certainly will when I'm off my jollyholiday.
