The code states:

150: Box junctions. These have criss-cross yellow lines painted on the road (see Other road markings section). You MUST NOT enter the box until your exit road or lane is clear. However, you may enter the box and wait when you want to turn right, and are only stopped from doing so by oncoming traffic, or by other vehicles waiting to turn right. At signalled roundabouts you MUST NOT enter the box unless you can cross over it completely without stopping.
Law TSRGD regs 10(1) & 29(2)

If this is the case how come no one seems able to to follow this most basic of rules?

Is the extra fifteen feet worth it? they know they are doing wrong because they will stare straight ahead at all times whilst stopped on the yellow painted markings.

Stop being so self centred and ignorant you useless idiots, it is worth noting that now the schools are returning the mums are the main culprits.

Bet they drive down the middle lane of the motorway too but that's another story frown

Aye...

What REALLY gets up my nose is followng the right turner at lights, who refuses to get right into the junction so that two people behind him can get through when the lights turn red again...

I'd guess that 99% of drivers do that in my neck o' the woods...

Notice that HC differs from TSRGD in that HC says exit must be clear, whilst the law is that you mustn't stop as a result of a stationary vehicle, with the exceptions

at the weekend i was in my car and approaching some traffic lights. the area is hatched so i stopped because the road ahead was not clear, only to be honked at by the person behind me.

i found this strange so as i can see the traffic isn't going anywhere quickly i lean out my window and ask him politely why he honked (maybe not to politely more in a why the censored did you blow your horn at me kind of way) the man answered back with this "the lights are censored green you little censored why the censored have you stopped" i then answered with "unless you're censored blind which i doubt you are since you're driving a censored car you can see the traffic is stopped and i can't censored go anywhere, i suggest you open your censored eyes or read the highway code and maybe then you wont embaress (sp) your wife so much in the future" she was sitting in the car trying to look invisible.

with this the cars started to move again so i went and just as i was going through the lights turned and he had to stop, i laughed at that small victory to me.

Anyone who gets a ticket in London for turning right at a box junction should check it carefully. Obviously the little hitlers that hand out tickets for this offence do not know the law, or wilfully ignore it (you decide), and merrily hand out their fines like confetti.

Wow - how do you direct your horn *at* someone? Mine just sounds.

When a chap yesterday honked "at" me, I wondered what was going on. Then realised that he'd lost control of his sandwich whilst on the phone and then whilst trying to retrieve it caught it against the wheel.

If they honk (particularly whilst stationary) and you're aware of their presence, then best way to secure your "minor victory" is to ignore them and not let people who are ignorant get involved in your life.

Following a numpty mum (chav in an old Picasso!) this morning - 35 in a straight line, 5mph around the roundabouts (no joke...digi speedo in the S was reading 5/6/7 around each one!!!).

So I beeped her at one when she was braking onto the roundabout and PAST the apex (WTF???), got brake lights a second later (yep...we nearly stopped!) and fingers raised (despite her little darlings in the back rolleyes). A few mins later at traffic lights I find myself alongside her and she starts having a go at me for 'being in the wrong lane at that roundabout'. I was so flabbergasted (I was BEHIND her the whole way!) that I lost the power of speech long enough for the lights to turn green.

These people really DON'T know how to f'n drive, do they?!? Or deal with other people. Yet they're breeding like rabbits...

I'd be happy for box junctions to be rigidly enforced if and only if:

1. we have a cast iron guarantee that tickets will only ever be issued for genuine offences and not simply dished out willy-nilly as soon as a vehicle is seen stopped in the box irrespective of circumstances

and

2. every box junction is first surveyed to ensure that its layout and/or interaction with other junctions/traffic lights (particularly during periods of peak traffic flow) doesn't make it unduly difficult/impossible to obey the law whilst attempting to make reasonable progress through the junction.

well said - I fear that traffic in London wouldn't move at all if box junction rules weren't 'bent' a bit...

What did you hope to achieve by beeping? Were you morse-coding some form of track tuition? In the event you encouraged her to slow down even further.

Not sure if numpties like you are better or worse than numpties like her. I mean imagine being stuck behind the pair of you.

This happens to me every week. I've been called a c*nt twice in the last month by wvm for explaining the meaning and purpose of a yellow box junction.

confused

And what should I have done?
- Sat their all quietly and meekly behind her like every other sheep in this country?
- Not point out to her that her driving was well below the standard expected on UK roads (surely she'd have failed a driving test for failing to make due progress???)?

I used the horn once. When I saw the response it got (i.e. she turned aggressive), I gave up. But until I'd determined what sort of driver she was, why was I wrong to use the horn???

There's a junction near me under a rail bridge with an enormous boxed area. It's so big (and partly hidden behind raised curbs) that you can't tell if the exit is clear until you've entered itbanghead

Havoc - you know you were wrong to use the horn surely?
I would probably have done the same but I know damn well it is wrong.

It's nonsense only insofar as it's an exaggeration of the truth. In reality, many box junctions in London (or, at least, many of the ones I've experienced) are ok, but there are enough which aren't for me to be *very* wary whenever Our Beloved Leader makes yet another comment regarding box junction penalties without any corresponding announcement that he first plans to sort out the ones that will easily become cash cows should they be enforced with zero tolerance...

Going back to my earlier post, I'd like to add a third pre-enforcement condition:

3. all the impatient so and sos who think it's ok to barge in front of someone and steal their exit gap, leaving the law-abiding driver stranded in the box, should have their cars/vans crushed in a mass public event, before being horsewhipped around Trafalgar Square and up the Mall, driven to the furthest point on the TfL transport network from wherever they live, stripped of all cash and credit/debit cards, then given an Oyster card with 5p credit and left to make their own way home, with their every move shadowed by a TfL revenue protection team...

...or something like that, anyway. Similar punishment to be dished out to anyone else who behaves in a manner which makes life on London roads even less tolerable for the average driver just trying to get to work/home.

ok - I'll clarify...

I've been threatened with 'a good kicking' twice for trying to remain legal at box junctions in London – if it comes down to a choice between some pyscho potentially knifeing me, or a fixed penalty for stopping in a yellow box, I know which one I'll take. You can call it exageration if you want, but I'm talking from experience...

and as to the point about traffic flow, with the artificially reduced sequencing time on London traffic lights, brought in to justify the congestion (sorry pollution, sorry 4x4, sorry anyone who's got a bit of spare cash) charge, it's almost impossible to clear some boxes before you're technically in the wrong...
