Just a quick note.

I've been using a Manfrotto suction mount for my on board video for a while without problem, however on a Brands track evening last Monday I was told that it was no longer an acceptable way to mount a camera!

I have now had confirmation from MSV that:

...our insurers only allow clamp-on brackets. These would have to attach to a headrest or roll cage.

So, please keep that in mind at MSV events.

Bugger.

I have a suction window mount and been using at MSV all year (Bedford, Snetterton and Cadwell).

If this has recently been changed i will be miffed although at Beford last week they said that hand held cameras were not allowed only because they had a case of someone dropping it and it slid under the brake pedal and resulted in a big crash!!

I also noticed that at Cadwell and Snetterton you need to sign a disclaimer but at Bedford there is no need!

Will see if any change this Friday!

Same for circuit days events, not that I'd ever use them again.

I reckon there's a difference between sucky mounts that just hold a tiny bullet cam (fine by me) and sucky mounts that hold a bigger thing (not fine).

I'd have hoped that every organiser would have been enforcing the no hand held cameras rule for the last million years. It doesn't take a pointyhead to work out that hand held camera plus shunt could easily equal hamburger!!

MSV said today their policy has not changed and suctions are allowed but the camera thing is under review.

My mount is a pro mount and is pretty rock solid and to be honest alot of other things could come loose first in the car before that comes off! There are no rules to my knowledge about what else has to be tied down in the car.

I have however seen some pretty flimsy suction mounts maybe meant to hold bullets but holding vid cams and they look a bit dicey and may come loose pretty easy.

At the end of the day there is nothing to clamp onto in the CSL so rules had better not bloody change or i am stuffed!

My info' comes from the MSV track day organiser, who checked with the MSV legal dept. I have no reason to doubt that he is right.

I quote: Just had a chat with our legal chap, and he said that our insurers only allow clamp-on brackets. These would have to attach to a headrest or roll cage.

i emailed Nick Rice at MSV trackdays and he emailed back that no change yet but they are looking at camera policy.

Today at Bedford no change and suction mount ok.

Looks like they have had a problem and likely to ban them soon!

PMSL, I was quoting Nick!

Guess it's a case of the left hand not knowing what the right is doing.

I hope that we can continue to use the suction mounts as I have nowhere else to mount the camera.

I use a bullet cam now but I used to use a camcorder bolted to the rollover bar, with a restraining strap in case the bolt pulled out of the camera. If the worry is a loose camera being thrown around inside the car, perhaps a suction mount plus suitable tether would be acceptable?

I have this year done both GoldTrack (at Thruxton) and BookaTrack (at Castle Combe) track days and both the organisers and the circuit in both cases have said that suction mounts for video cameras are not allowed.

Fortunately I have a headrest clamp from B-Hague and in both cases this was quite acceptable.

its normally the circuit that specifies whats allowed and not i think and not the organisers .......

the organisers seem to get very confused as they give briefs i guess at a number of circuits and muddled is an understatement. I recently had a briefing at Bedford with MSV then a weeklater with EASYtrack and totally different (slight exageration but you hopefully know what i mean) and any novice on the Easytrack evening would have been waiting for indicators fro cars in front before overtaking.

I suppose it will be all sorted over the winter.............and i will need to find someway of clamping my cam in the csl, not easy.
