HELP diagnosing my transmission problem

My W reg transit with 90,000 miles has got a problem with either the cluth or gearbox.
Basically when i drive off it has problems selecting second, this used to just be a problem when cold and i would work around it by being slower in moving the stick into second position. today it was worse, much worse. it is still only with second gear but even when hot.
I accelarate and when moving it into second all i get is that horrbile sound of gggcgcgcgcgc as it grinds. it will go into gear but only if i let the revs drop right off and gently put it in. it isn't a problem with any other gear and it goes into 2nd fine when coming down the box.
What is my problem? clutch not releasing properly (which i would presume makes the same problem in every gear, which it isn't) or a FUBAR gearbox.
