Wondered how long a USB lead I can use in practice if I want to try some tethered shots.

I'm just getting a download of a trial version of Capture Control. Unfortunately the budget won't stretch to a WT-2 at the moment, and I'm not sure if that's the way I will want to go. But while the supplied USB will probably do nicely for some static macro work and some portraits, it might be nice to go a bit further when shifting around on a tripod.....

I'm sure that the model said that she didn't mind if I was tied down......

If you use active USB extension cables (which are usually 5m long) then 20m is the max. After that the USB protocol goes wrong...

what about if you used 4 x active cables, then a powered USB hub - would that give you an extra 20m?

No. Timing issues are the problem, and devices stop talking over a certain number of milliseconds message delay.

Ah - cheers!

Great place when you have a question! 20m sounds pretty useful, I shall see how I get on....
