I'm having a senior moment I'm sure but I'm considering replacing a 996 C4 with a Maserati 4200 or a Ferrari 348. I only do 5k miles a year and the car will be garaged and used weekly as opposed to daily.

Am I mad? I've always wanted a Maserati - even more than a Ferrari but I know how much trouble they can be. Budget is around £30k - though I'm considering spending half of that on a 3200 or a Quattroporte Evo and doing something sensible with the rest. The car would be a 12 - 18 month purchase.

Any pearls of wisdom?

Half your £30k will only buy you trouble if your after a 3200. £15k, it'll be the earliest with highest mileage, the tattiest and worst maintained that exists. Now, that will be a money pit.
A top condition one with the 'right' history and condition will be high teens to low twenties at best.
You can't run a 3200 on the cheap and expect it to maintain its value come resale time.
So in answer to your question............... yes you're mad!

I'd be looking at £10k for a Quattroporte or around £18k looking at current prices for a good 2000ish 3200.

I would say that 18 is about middle money for a 2000. A really nice one with low mileage, service, etc, etc, etc, will be in the 20's.

A few things to check on any 3200, it MUST have the red key, had the recalls done, main dealer history (belts at 34k, chains at 68k), rear silencer boxes are solid at the inlet joint, always had selina racing oil used,

But, find the right one and you wouldn't regret it they are great cars.

Go find one to sit in - your mind will be made up straight away, without even driving it. 911 C4 is a great car, maserati still has something a bit extra. They do also drive well and sound pretty good too nowadays.

Regarding the 4200 - this is the sort of thing - manual, sat nav lowish miles anf FMSH though the colour scheme isn't really what I'm after.

Maybe - the 348 is tempting - and I haven't decided between a 4200, 3200 or much cheaper Quattroporte.

I've had a 3200 and now have a GranSport, if i were in your position I would
choose a good quality 3200, lots of fun for not a lot of money.

348? Do you really want one, or are you just thinking 'entry level Ferrari' (I once did this, admittedly!)

I really like the 348 - more so than the 308 and 328. I would class a GT4 or Mondial as entry level to be honest.

Does anyone know when the significant changes came in regarding the 3200 & 4200? New software for the engine management and Skyhook suspension for example? I've narrowed a choice down to a post '01 3200 or 4200 with a manual gearbox. There is an Assett Corsa locally but it doesn't appear to be in great condition (parked under trees and wheels kerbed).

I agree entirely, and personally prefer the 348 too. Not saying it's better than 308/328/355/360..... just that I prefer it.

They are massively differnt cars ! a 3.2 twin turbo v8 (same block as a f360) vs. a 4.2 NA lump same bitsish as an f430. Auto vs. cambi v. different etc etc etc etc etc etc Please don't say you were comparing like for like !!

Not sure I understand the point of your post? I realise they are different hence the apprehension in what to go for.

I'd say go for a decent 4200.

My brother had a 3200 and the power delivery was digital, you either got 30 bhp or with another 2mm of throttle 370bhp.

In his automatic car it was a handful, in the manual he had as a loan whilst the leaking cylinder heads were sorted, it was totaly undriveable.

The deliver on the 4200 is much better and then whole car much more sorted.

Thanks Bertie - I'm pretty much decided on a 4200 - cam chains instead of belts is a big plus. A real shame the boomeraing lights had to go however.
