Not surprised its given up just shy of 400k miles. Still on the original engine and tyres ?

They all seem to do that. Heat seems to be an issue and may the grease goes a bit sticky, plus stiction in the mechanism. Some say a sharp rap on the dashboard does the job, as does taking it out and tapping it sharply, as does driving in reverse at high speed, as does driving at between 60 and 80mph whilst tapping the speedo. They all work, apparently, although to varying degrees.

Or you can have it sent to Speedy Cables www.speedycables.com, as I did. It'll cost abut £120 for a refurb.

Leave it alone and keep driving it...mine has done this every time it gets to X9999 miles - did it last week on the Surrey Run to France as it ticked over to 50K. It will start again on it's own...mine took 30 miles this time...
