Nikon D80 problems...
Discussion
Sorry, not a Nikonian myself or able to give any detailled, quality answers, but have you started by cleaning the lens contacts, and the same for the battery ones too. I guess the other two things you could try (if you have more than one) - try a different battery (or label them so you can work out if its always on the same one) and do the same with memory cards.
Also - is there a firmware update for this camera?
Good luck with fixing it.

I'm not a Nikon user either, but perhaps a search of the Nikon users site http://www.nikonians.org/ might deliver some results.
To be honest it sounds like a fairly generic error message, perhaps it can be made to show an error code of some sort ?
Anyhow, all the best with it, could be something easily fixed

Hi,
Hope it's all going ok and hasn't come back but the err message is a general message. It's doesn't relate to anything and it's just the cameras way of saying there is something wrong.
Normally it is the lens that hasn't been attached or clicked round fully. When the lens is attached it connects to the aperture coupling lever inside the camera (this is the black lever on the left side of the mount as you look at it). The camera uses this to determine the maximum aperture of the lens and also adjust the lenses aperture before taking the picture.
Sometimes this can become bent if the lens is put on wrong or if some Sigma lenses are used (their mount if different to Nikon lenses which pickup this lever more gradually). This can result in the dreded err message or fee message.
Have a check if the camera still shows this every now and again but if it does the ultimatly it will need to go back to Nikon for a repair
