need to lose run flats on my new 335d
Discussion
the ride is just too hard
bmw say there is no space in boot for a space saver, i looked they are right
do i carry one in the boot, or a can of tyre weld on the off-chance it can help me in an emergecy
plus which tyres should i go for, eagle f1s, p zeros, at rear we are talking 255,35,18s
any ideas would be very much appreciated

you should give it a while longer, just been to the south of France and back with a full load and roof box, admittedly not much "serious driving" but it was very smooth on the motorways.
I know people who have had high speed punctures and it is rather scary and I would prefer the peace of mind of the runflats.

Completely agree on this one,sod replacing them for the sake of it at least wait untill they are due.I know people who have had high speed punctures and it is rather scary and I would prefer the peace of mind of the runflats.

Sorry if you guys have read what I have posted previously on tyre threads but I have to keep harping on about these tyres coz they are soooooo good, Falken FK 452's, www.falkentyres.co.uk ., They were recommended to me by someone on the Z4 forum who had ditched the runflats, when i priced them up at £330 for a full set, 255 rears 225 fronts, i thought well must be worth a go at that price, what a fantastic tyre, it has totally transformed my car, and I was one who swore blind by Pilot sports, don't waste your money on big branded stuff anymore, just be brave enough to see past the 'Badge' and have a go with them, you will not look back and you will certainly not spend mega bucks on branded stuff ever again, check the reviews of other drivers who have tried them on www.bmwland.co.uk this includes E46 M3 drivers who regularly trip to the 'Ring.......
got these on 323i and they are very goodContinental have a new compressor and sealant system that seems more sophisticated than the Holts stuff. In 15 years of motoring, I've yet to have a blow out or a tyre that could not be repaired using the stuff and to be honest if I did and I were 200 miles from home a runflat would be useless anyway.. RF (work of the devil) are there to make BMW more profit.
produce 1.3m cars- approx 70% have runflats.
1m cars less the cost of a fifth wheel, tyre and jack (say £70)+ increased cost of runflats (lets say £5 each to BMW so £20 for 4 tyres). Saves £50 per car. Thats £50m on the bottom line!!! Do the same with I-Drive (all the saved buttons and wiring etc)...you can see why BMW are not listening to consumers, the press etc...its all about the shareholders..

Maybe. I think there is also a question of how many people are there today who can:produce 1.3m cars- approx 70% have runflats.

1. Physically lift an 18" or 19" wheel out of the boot well of a car and fit themselves. I reckon only 10-20 of BMW customers would even attempt this.
2. Complete point one on the M25 not on a driveway...
You just wouldn't do it. RAC or AA everytime now.
I am quite pleased with the run flats. The ride on our 335d M Sport is better than the previous e46 330d M Sport (both on 18" wheels). I would suggest you have a play around with the tyre pressure as I have found it makes a big difference. On the 120d we have I have set the pressures at 4 psi lower than recommended and it's improved the car no end and removed the twitchyness so often experienced on uneven / poor road surfaces.
Having had two blow outs (not regular punctures) in the past, one of which destroyed the wheel as well as the tyre, I won't be changing for conventional tyres.
Had one puncture with run flats on the 335 but caught it early and was able to continue the journey and had the tyre replaced FOC 500 miles later under warranty.
Regards
Chris

thanks all really helpful
gonna run with tyre weld and goodyear eagle f1s or dunlops sp 9000's, micheldever tyres (01962774437) have priced either at £420 fitted
the falkens look good but at only £100 cheaper dont think the switch is worthwhile
as a bloke that is happy to change his own tyres, the run flats at nearer £800 for a new set just dont make ANY sense to me - this and the idrive are the bm's achilles heel

Trade off between a cold windy night waiting for a wheel to be fitted every 15 years vs 50% increased cost of tyre replacement and poor ride and handling characteristics is a no brainer for me. I'd rather have the better ride and handling any day or why else would I have bothered to buy a BMW (not that I have!)

So aparently the new M3 isn't on runflats. What solution do they use for spare/get home?

The 335d has tyre pressure sensors so you know when something is wrong (if the steering does not give it away?) and you then have options.
Mind you no-one has raised the subject of if you do have a blow out and can get home/to place of convenience - how easy is to get new tyres? Mine has Bridgestones on it which always seem to be difficult to get hold of?
