look, i know this is a largely futile question, but is there anything that can be done to improve the mpg on the rangie? i wafted to London and back yesterday, never using full throttle, never overtaking, never driving hard, 98% of the time cruising on the motorway and for the 330 mile round trip it used a tank of fuel costing 90 quid eek

can i remap the ecu or something? anything? at present its less efficient than a Ferrari being driven like a maniac by a maniac.

id appreciate any thoughts you have. apart from should-have-bought-the-diesel-or-the-4.6-oh-so-amusing-replies, Sinclair.

thanks in advance,
N.

Should have bought the diesel.hehe Thats why when i just sold my last P38 4.6 i swore blind i wouldnt buy another petrol RR.Well ive already broke that promise and bought a 90 V8.But there is another RR diesel coming up in November that i will probably be buying. In the end i was doing £140 a week in fuel.Over a period of 9 years of ownership i couldnt better 9-11mpg around town with 20-21mpg at 56mph.And those were the best results i ever achieved. An LPG system will cost around £1800-2000.But LPG systems on P38,s are a bit hit and miss.

There's a "couple" of things that can be done, but these will only give you a small improvement - at best 3 to 5 mpg.

1) Tyres - put on some lower friction, harder compound. Less grip but an extra 1 or 2 mpg.
2) Weight - strip out everything that can be removed.
3) Air dynamics - no much one can do about a brick except drive a bit slower and accelerate/brake a bit easier.
4) Turn of air-con.
5) Stop playing meat-loaf etc.
6) Only drive just after a rain storm. (Wet roads have less friction)

hehe

Dunno what the 4.6 is like, but the BMW4.4 in our Rangie can be coaxed into giving 24-26mpg on the motorway when cruising...

Sounds like LPG is the way to go.

2k install though, with patchy reliability, might not be worth it?

might just have to start charging more. reckon people will wear 17 quid per mile travelling expenses?

LPG is the only way to go. I have a 4.6 bought in Feb this year with LPG and it's great. Never had any problems with overheating or anything. The system was expensive though £2k plus VAT.

However, in cost terms it's great. A full tank of gas is about £30 and will get 240 ish on the motorway. In cash equivalent to diesel terms I rekon on about 28mpg round towm and 40 on the motorway.
