Interlagos is actually quite far out from the centre of Sao Paulo.
It is a massive city, makes London feel like a town.
We stayed in the centre and it was fine but the only issue is that often the taxi drivers do not know all parts of the city so it is a good idea to get directions back to the hotel in Portuguese before you go to the circuit.

Check this link (its in Portuguese) but gives the nearest metro station(Jurubatuba) and the numbers of four buses that pass there. The metro is safe to travel on but that station is about 2 miles from the circuit. I once went to the Indy cars at Jacarepagua, Rio and they had lots of special buses on to go the final distance to the track.

Here's the circuit in google maps;

As for hotels, it depends what you want to spend and what is available. You may find things are pretty booked up already. Try expedia to get an idea.
