I can recommend Princes Lodge which is located just the other side of the A1 to Knaresborough. We used all of it back in June for overnight accommodation for some guests following my daughters wedding. Lovely lady and just looked on the site singles £25. Google Princes Lodge at Whixley (even though it isn't). I'd say its more likely to be around the 3 hour mark due to various roadworks but it does depend on what day you travel. It took my parents 6 hours to get from Ampthill to Bridlington which is WAY over time.Hope this helps
Peter

1) Take A59 from Knaresborough to Harrogate
2) Drive through Harrogate - straight across big round about heading west then straight across small roundabout, still heading west.
3) Continue on road to Beckwithshaw
4) At Beckwithshaw, turn right at T junction
5) Drive north, (note, there is a very steep drop, don't go too quick here!)
6) Once up the other side of the hill, take the 1st exit at the roundabout onto Penny Pot lane, (note, this is an unmarked road and the locals tend to tank it, so what out for 4x4's coming the other way at mega speed!)
7) At the T junction, turn right.
8) At the next junction, turn left onto the A59 to Skipton.
9) Drive past the secret spy base Golf Balls at Menwith Hill (shhh, I didn't mention that!)
10) You drop down a dip in the road.
11) Once you come up the other side, look for a sign post for Stump Cross Caverns.
12) Once spotted, take this junction on the right.
13) You are now on a very little used road, enjoy!
14) Eventually, you'll come to a T junction, turn right, (note, this is a tricky junction, traffic from the right is difficult to spot and may be moving at very high speed!)
15) Once on the road, start grinning and drive! (note, there's one small hamlet you pass with a cross roads marked, you must slow down for this!)
16) At the end of the road, (at Greenhow hill) turn left towards Stump Cross Caverns.
17) Once out of the 40 limit, enjoy again!
18) You will eventually reach Grassington, drive through the village, staying on the main road and follow the signs for Skipton.
19) The road to Skipton will eventually reach the A59 again.
20) At the Roundabout, turn left to Harrogate.
21) At Harrogate, go straight on to Knaresborough.
22) And relax!
This map should help
Harrogate
P.S. Gemini will have some superior routes I would wager

P.S. If you want a shorter version, turn right at Greenhow hill and Go back to Kanresborough via Pateley Bridge (see map).

May I just say welcome to Gods own driving county where (as yet) there are NO FIXED SPEED CAMERAS!
The routes mentioned above are excellent but, to be honest, if you are visiting us from the poor south it won't matter where you go. Start from Knaresborough and go through Harrogate into the Dales and just enjoy!
PS let us know when you are coming and we might be able to meet up for a pint (I live about two miles from Goldsborough). We are a friendly lot Oop north.
