Hello,

Sold a lens on ebay last week, and posted it yesterday. My wife packaged it, and it was tightly packed in a box, with bubble wrap, and foam, so it was very secure.

I was paid by paypal, and have started a transfer-to-bank thingy.

I posted it yesterday at 12:30pm, and this morning at 08:51am I recieved this email from the buyer:

[quote] Dear altrezia,

Hi,
Item arrived today, looks like its been damaged in transit, packaging round lense none on ends, probabaly been dropped on end, filter smashed, I've taken lens to a local shop to be checked and have any broken glass removed, could you please advise if this is covered by insurance?
Thanks, Goldie

Anyone think it's dodgy? I mean, the lens was well packed, and he says he's been to a lens shop, all before 8:51am?

He was being nice about it, but I've been ripped off through ebay before so am always cautious! I'm really hoping he's genuine, and I have no problems claiming on the royal mail people, but I dont want to lose out on any cash..

Cheers,
Al.

I'd get him to e mail you a photo of the damage (for insurance purposes - cough).

If I was a devious person, I'd buy a damaged lense on ebay. keep it for a while, then buy another perfect lense from ebay. I'd then claim that the second one was damaged by the post, and claim the insurance. That way, I'd (a) have a good copy lense and also (b) have the cash/second one repaired.

I can then either keep the cash, or sell the second one.

I presume that this lense is a common expensive one? A Canon 17-40 or similar, I'd hazard a guess at?

Surely if it's just the filter it's no real problem? Last filter I bought on ebay cost about £3.50!

Shops must open early where he lives! And public transport must be good or the roads must have been quiet if he can do all that and get back to send an email before 9am!

  • Edited to say.....just read your original post again and that name rings a bell for some reason! I'm sure I haven't had any dealings with them but it certainly rings bells.

Well, previous item was a 400D from the canon outlet bought only a week or so before so I doubt he's swapped it for another. I wonder if it's just a broken filter.

Seems OK, replied saying that shop said the lens was OK and it was just the filter.
Given him the post office receipt and he seems happy enough.

phew.

8:51am seems dodgy but at least he's not being a pain, so I'd ask for some pictures of the damage as already suggested, including the serial number. How did you send the item, insured?

EDIT:

Just shows you there are lots of honest folks on Ebay also.
In my experience they out weigh the scammers if you watch what you are buying. i.e not too cheap and from HongKong.

I've made it into Fixation by 7.45am before so 'by 8.51am' is not too unrealisitic for an initial inspection.
