what a berk, if only Ron had a reduced power button for a couple of laps, still gets his one two finish, rewarding the team player in the process....

I think he's just being honest, but hasn't really thought through the implications of what he is saying. I would imagine most of the drivers in the pit lane would answer the same if they told the absolute truth. Michael Schumacher is celebrated for his drivers world titles, aside from the tifosi i'd imagine very few people ever mention the constructors titles he helped secure for Ferrari.
Of course Alonso prefers to win drivers titles, and a happy by-product of that for the team is his points carry over to the constructors championship (at least for now).
In a sport increasingly dominated by politicians and yes-men, I applaud Alonso for being honest enough to admit he is totally driven by personal success, after all its not as if its to the detriment of the team in terms of results unless he runs Hamilton off the road.

I agree - if drivers are supposed to put the team ahead of their own victories, why even race? Lets just have team orders dictate the result of all the races...The public want to see drivers compete, not teams and I applaud Alonso for being honest enough to admit that he's there to win, not make Ron happy (despite that fact that winning ought to make Ron happy).

Constructors championship is far less important, people only remember the winning driver.

Except that it's the constructors that PAY the drivers.

It's becoming increasingly obvious that Alonso (spit the dummy because I realise I'm not as good as I think I am) will go to Flavio Briatore at the end of the year.

Good luck with that. Enjoy the mid-field! Could have had a long career, now destined to be the next Villeneuve.

There's an interesting side story to go with the Alonso/Renault thing, but it'll appear in the press before too long so I won't give the game away. It'll amuse many though.

Alonso's behaviour is becoming increasingly bizarre. To even consider a move back to midfield Renault is quite peculiar.

I heard it on the grape vine that Renault compromised thier 2007 car's early development by throwing effort and money to stay at the top in 2006, this years car was doomed to be an also ran from the off set and most of thier effort is going into next years car.... I believe Honda are in a similar boat. Next year could be very interesting with, hopefully, more than four cars in with a chance of winning.

So Renault and Honda will only have competative cars every two years? I'm sure Ferrari/Mclaren are shitting themselves.

When Mark Smith was there, Renault staggered their development IIRC. Mark was desiging one car whilst someone else (Bob Bell?) designed the next year's one. Seemed to work well.

Re the Alonso/Renault story, I am aware of something that relates to this. Like Ahonen, I can't say anything, but presume that this will be revealed tomorrow following the hearing; assuming that all the facts are revealed....

Except that the drivers directly influence the constructors by winning races for their own.

Or are you suggesting that any driver should put the constructors in front and necessarely give up their position if it means that it would benefit the constructors?

That was for the drivers championship, if you swap positions your still getting the same constructor points silly.
The constructors trophy is just a side line for someone who is getting their arse kicked in the drivers championship.

Here Here...

F1 is about the drivers championship, the constructors is just a nice add-on for the team.

Alonso is saying what he believe in his heart, where as Lewis is saying what McLaren PLC have told him to say.

Although Lewis is doing a stunning job as this years rookie, I want Alonso to win the championship, stick 2 fingers up at Ron and jump back into a Renault for next year, then let's watch the sparks fly bewteen those two smile

What I took from this article:

Alonso reconfirms his lack of empathy with the team. His attitude is a perfectly normal and honest one, i.e. he is racing primarily for himself, but his decision to say that and nothing more at a time like this is yet another opportunity lost to get the team on his side. One has to conclude that he does not care.

Hamilton's words identify himself with the team far more than the usual driver. You'd expect him to feel a great loyalty with the background he has with them. Difficult to say how much is genuine solidarity and where his instinctive grasp of team politics (exploiting the contrast with Alonso's attitude) begins. Sounding off about sticking it to Ferrari in their backyard is the kind of thing that will have the garage cheering but will never be forgotten in certain other quarters. Brave lad.

I cannot believe that he isn't supporting the team in this......one hopes that he has compromised the remainder of his season, if he is runner up to Lewis, Mclaren could release him from his contract with Rons infamous "second is the first of the losers" comment hehe
