I’m genuinely looking for some good old PH advice! When I first passed my test 18 months ago, I drove like a complete as some of us do. I would regularly "speed" didn’t matter what the zone was, just go at the speed I thought was right, even though it was way above most other drivers, and the limit and looking back I did some quite dangerous things.

The thing that really made me learn was when I had a "no fault accident" when some crashed into the back of me while I was waiting to enter a roundabout, really shook me up and realised that you aren’t really that safe after all in a car, I could do nothing to stop being hit and mine was a write off.

Joined the IAM and has some other training with my driving instructor, but have a problem in 30 limits. I stick to these limits now, 1. I have a lot more time to react, 2. Its how I’d expect people to drive around the area I live, and 3. The endless prosecutions for speeding, gatsos, camera vans and truvelos in this area, being on a licence that is under 2 years old, if you get caught speeding more than once, you are disqualified and have to have a retest.

The main problem I have in 30's is that I feel like a numpty! The traffic in front vanishes, and I end up with a massive queue of cars behind me, and the car immediately behind me very very close to the back of my car, often so close that I cant see the number plate!

Do I speed up? and go against what i've been taught and what im comfortable doing?

Do I stick to the limit, get tailgated really badly?
If so, how do you deal with tailgaters? Is ignoring the best policy?

Over to you

Thing that works with tailgaters from experience is to let you foot off the accelerator for a few secs then speed back up to the limit.

This creates a larger gap and they will normally stay back after the 2nd or third time.

DO NOT do the brake light stampy thing as its like a red rag to a bull!

If I'm being tailgated i will allow the gap in front of me to increase

If the car in front suddenly breaks i will need the extra time and space to either steer out of danger, or break whilst taking into account numpty behind.

If Mr Tailgater is really close, then i put my hazards on until they backoff.

If they don't backoff, and the occasion lends it self, say at a junction etc, i will stop get out and ............

You'll always have this problem in a 30. In a lot of modern cars, 30 feels so slow. For instance the Leon will quite happily pull 3rd gear with my foot completely off the accelerator and maintain about 30 on a flat road.

I see your point about not wanting to collect any points due to the possible ban and retest, so just exercise your judgement and if you want to stick at 30 then do so. If people want to drive like nutters and get past simply let them overtake, you've got nothing to prove.

I agree with Soulpatch, don't do the braking thing it only pisses people off behind and raises the red mist.

Eventually you get used to the fact that some people will drive like ts whatever the conditions. For instance M25 this morning traffic pretty heavy and no-one going anywhere fast so the truck behind me decided to sit right on my chuff (scarey when you're in the Elise), plonker.

Possibly, although maybe in an 'action-speak-louder-than-words' type of conversation

I tend to just roll along at whatever speed feels appropriate.

I was particually amused when rumbling past a school at 8:30 at about 15mph (cars and kids *everywhere*) to be flashed and abused by a 4x4 following me.

Which then parked illegally on the school stripy lines.

And disgourged 3 kids.

:sigh:

Tricky one this.

I know exactly what you mean about sticking to the limits, especially if you are in a car that is specifically designed to pay little heed to the limits

Thing is though, whilst you do get the idiots tailgating you have to weigh up the potential costs. For instance, if you get nicked, is the chap behind going to pay your fine and take your points? Exactly.

Though saying that I am not advocating holding up traffic a la Numpty.

Tailgating is something that annoys me immensely, I find one of the best solutions is to adjust your speed to the gap that is being left. So if they are two feet off your bumper slow down to 5mph. They soon get the message.

You could also then make up the gap (and keep the arrogant ers out there) should they overtake, but I wouldnt for one minute condone this sort of behaviour...

When I try and drive at the limit like this i can imagine the hatred and abuse that would be coming my way if the person behind could have somehow told me what they think of me.

Try not to look in your mirrors?

My view is, stick to your guns, if it's a 30, then it's a 30. In areas of population and schools etc it's one of the only speed limits I rigidly enforce, and by that I mean I will speak to anyone over about 38ish, and anyone over 45 will get a ticket at least !!!
So anyway, stick to your guns, most people will respect you and thank you for it, any tosser who doesn't like it, will probably try to overtake you. Just remember it's his problem, not yours, don't rise to the bait. His day will come, believe me.

Had an ambulance (not emergency) tailgate me through a thirty limit a few weeks ago. When we stopped at a set of lights, I decided to enquire as to why he was doing it....

Me: "Why are you sitting 3 inches from my rear?"
Twat: "I wasn't, I was at least this far behind"
(holds hands in the air approximately 12 inches apart)
Me: "Are you &!*#£%$ serious?"

Theres no hope with some people!

Im not going to hijack the thread but THIS IS THE ATTITUDE WE WANT FROM THE POLICE!!!!

Can we not scrap gatsos and laser vans and just hire a load of 46TEE's instead??!

Agreed.
We might be more tolerant if scamera vans were not ticketing with such strict tolerances.

Yeah but if you get some psychotic c**t who doesnt care about your car or theirs then you may as well be offering them out for a fight!

Im not exactly a small bloke but I like to aviod confrontation at all costs. If you dont give them an obvious provokation then they cant start.

If you are built like a brick s**thouse and know several lethal martial arts - go for it Will be a wonderful surprise for tailgater especially if its a wanks power boy!
