So there is a main road on my route to work which at lunchtimes from time to time (well in the 3 years i've been using the route) has a camera van. Its a road coming out of a dodgy area which always has lil rudeboys flying down so as the scamera only helps slow people down they have put up one of the signs which illuminate the 30 speed limit everytime someone passes (even when they are doing less than 30). However today i drove past the illuminating sign and it didnt go off BUT there was a scamera van there today! WTF? So they switch it off when a scamera van is there. anyone think thats pathetic?

Where's the problem?
The scamera seems to be doing its job of slowing peeps down and no doubt catches those who don't see it in time....the sign alone obviously didn't do much good on its own so why worry if it's switched off?...No doubt once the scamera is gone the sign will once again be illuminated then everyone can ignore it again...woohoo

Its not really pathetic is it?. Its a 30mph road, so if someones doing more then they know the risk of getting caught etc. Who cares if the signs on or not. Not always a fan of the van positions, but people who speed in built up area's pi$$ me off.

Are you sure it was a camera van and not an ANPR van?. If its on the edge of a dodgy area then they may be running an op to catch some of the iffy motors that come in and out.

So the sign comes on regardless of speed?

I don't see the issue.

Surely the issue is that the sign reminds everyone its a 30 limit and as flashing speed signs are meant to be a greater deterrent presumably people slow when they see it.

Today there is a camera van there so the sign isn;t working so people won't slow so more will be caught by the camera.

Exactly…I think some form of initiatives are needed on that road as it is easy to stray to 40+ as it’s a quiet road with a large pavement which has grass then the pedestrian part of the pavement.

That’s NOT the issue it’s the fact that they have spent all this money on this sign to slow people down for safety yet they switch it off when they realise it will stop making them money. The sign has actually slowed people down on this road so why switch it off? (answer to make money)

These kind of actions are what make me think the scameras are there for money and NOT safety!

Completely agreed.

Indeed, the 'target' and funding issues are set to really it is not in the SCP's best interest to actually do their job. If camera's actually did their jobs in actually slowing people down, their target should be to catch nobody, as there is nobody speeding though the 'danger area'.

Actually what happens in order to catch more people, this has the effect in NOT warning people and thus people go through the danger zone faster... thus negating ANY 'safety' argument!

But are we sure it has been switched off?
Perhaps it's broken.
The point being we don't know. But I can see how it is easier to believe it was switched off to earn extra coin to pay for the scamera van and its running costs as scamera partnerships are cunning animals.

Do we actually NEED another road sign (working or not) telling us what the speed limit is on a road we travel regularly...shirley we know what the limit is on that road already?
