Now that the argument about 'speed kills' has been shown up to be single digit percentages instead of thirty percent, they have come up with another mantra to persecute us with frown

Note the reference to speed limits and enforcement on the MSN article especially

Will slowing down really save the Gorilla? Sigh....

Put prices up to keep emissions down

Wheres the logic?

Does paying £1.20 a litre mean that my customers magically become closer to me?

And naturally they totally ignore the benefit to emissions of keeping traffic flowing. Stop-start traffic causes way more emissions than free-flowing motorway traffic, I'd wager.

I still do not understand why we have all these ruddy speed humps, you slow down on approach, thus more wear on brakes etc, then as soon as you are over, put your foot down, and chuck out lots of emmissions?

Easier to keep at a steady speed throughout rather than 'race the space' between 'em wink

In some cars the only undestructive speed over them is less than 10 mph.

You're not suggesting that one should maintain a steady speed of less than 10 mph? wink

Umm..this is Pistonheads, not yoghurtknittinglentalist.com . Speed humps were invented as an approved method to try out those new exhaust mods. The correct approved method is:

1. Approach speed hump at legal limit
2. Stop in front of bump then driver over at <5mph.
3. Floor it in 1st (wheelspin is optional) to next bump
repeat steps 1-3

Years ago met one of thesenumpties on the road, or a predecessor actually.

VW POlo with a sticker 40 is the only green speed.

Yes you've guessed it, 40 in 60, and 40 in 30 past a school at kicking out time. She left me for dead at that point. I just wanted to kick her in the crutch, oops meant clutch.

I'd love to take one of these "slow is green" chaps for a ride in my car, which has a fairly accurate MPG display.

First we'll cruise along the road at 30mph. Watch the display hover around the 50MPG mark.

Then double back and do the same at 20mph. What's that? The display has dropped down closer to 30MPG? Oh my!

Then we'll swap the mode to display trip MPG, and reset it. Head towards a town with it reading in the mid to high 30s. Firstly, trip over some speed humps. Slowing down and crawling over the needlessly sharp/high speed humps dropped the economy down to mid-20s? That can't be!

And what's this? A traffic light needlessly red through bad phasing. So by the time we stop, wait, and get going again our smug, planet-saving 30+MPG has become a figure in the high teens.

I suspect that evidence would be instantly discounted on the basis of,

a) It's real and demonstrable, rather than a pretty approximated, modelled, graph.
b) Wrong type of car/roads/driving or day ending in 'y'.

Ah, and now we get onto Greenspeed and their entertaining "20 questions" page, http://www.greenspeed.nildram.co.uk/Greenspeed%20s... to which I'd like to add, "26. Do you actually know how to count to twenty?" and "27. Are you sure?"

Greenspeed said:
8. Which would give the car less advantage over the bus and train?
9. Which would decrease the comparative advantage of the car over cycling and walking?
10. Which discourages longer car journeys?
Oh hello. It's starting to get a bit beyond safety and the environment, isn't it? Maybe a little bit, "look at those pesky super-rich with their ten mile journeys and their arriving the same day they left."

Greenspeed said:
16. Which requires lower standards of road design?
Woah. This would be the local government angle, then? It's not exactly a safety measure then... but more of a, "let's make the roads crap" move?

Greenspeed said:
18. Which would be more equitable between poorer and richer travelers?
Ah, here we go. Of course, poor people don't ever travel by car, right? Well, no, not in the self-serving let's play make-believe socialism world of the "green" campaigner. It's more of the same anti-capitalist, anti-car drum playing the same old rhythm.

And yes, it's transparent as a pane of Pilkington's finest. Why do all of these types assume everybody but them has the IQ of a sea sponge?

Yep, I belive that might have been where we were in the days of traffic cops, radar (not lidar) and a policy that was broadly focussed on engineering not speed cameras.

Oh no! I'm pining for the good old days! I must be turning into my dad eek
