e39 lighter socket

Don't smoke but use lighter socket for sat nav/charging kids gameboys etc. When I remove the charger the barrel of the lighter has always come out with it as if on spring and then retracted. Tonight it didn't and now I can't make it retract! Does it mean it's knackered, or savable? And if it's saveable, how do I removed the storage tray and whole lighter assembly to fit it? Anyone have any bright ideas?
