Looking at relocating my cats slightly further back so that they can sit further from the ground in the larger rear area of the heat sheild. Not a lot further back but the question is could this render them useless?

Given that they only work well when hot, you are likely to reduce efficiency. Provided it gets through an MoT that's no problem. I guess you must have a different exhaust set up to mine as my ones are tucked up by the manifolds and not near the ground at all.

I have capa long tubes which forces things further back. I'm guessing only 6 inches back or so and I'm able to get them into the back area of the heatshiled and thus rise them up.

SS, yeah thats the other option! But come MOT time I doubt I could be arsed swapping over - though richard has his pass without them on

Well I wouldnt suggest you can pass without cats. You can try.. Best is if you have swapable pipes so you can use them offroad when not required. If you did a dyno run with open headers it would show if the rest of the exhaust was causing a problem. Plus that would sound well cool anyway smile

I have to say I am liking the sound excuse on its own! biggrin Its just the pain in the arse of unplugging the sensors, unbolting the exhaust, putting the cats back in, making sure I have gotten the required gaskets etc... going to see the price of cat relocation first

did you hear back from Roger on your pipe? What would you be looking for?

I relocated my cats.... As long as you keep them indoors for a couple of weeks they should adapt well.
