car has begun to smoke when hot and after a short while restarted. Dulford say valve guides/stems and that it is not much of a problem. On its 3rd rebuild 8k ago now on 30k. Should I ditch it now?

When they say not much of a problem this means engine out and a refurbished head so expect about a 3k cost. On the upside it will be perfect when you get it back and it should go for another 30k at least. Assuming the bottom end is ok!

Nothing to worry about. What oil are you running? If it's 0-40w then that will smoke a treat as it's so thin. It runs down the valve guides and into the combustion chambers. Whilst keeping an eye on the oil level, change to a thicker grade of oil such as 15-50w and it should stop the problem.

In my experience (and TVR Power's recommendations), stay away from Mobil 1 as it seems particularly smokey.
