Hi Guys,

We have been here 3 years and now Tesco car insurance are insisting we swap our Aussie DL for a UK DL.

We travel O/S often and the legislation says you don't need to swap if you do a trip outside the UK once in every 6 month period.

Does anybody know of an insurance company that will allow you to keep a foreign licence?

Many thanks

Rich

My (now) wife was living in the UK for about four years, and drove on an Irish licence with no problems. We had insurance with Admiral.

But it might be different with non-EU licences.

TBH I'm surprised they let us drive in England with an Aussie licence, given the pathetic "standard" of driving here...

Thanks John,

I found this on www.directgov

Can you drive in Great Britain (GB) if your driving licence was issued in another country?
Conclusion
you can drive in Great Britain (GB) on your full, valid driving licence from Gibraltar, Guernsey, Jersey, Isle of Man or a Designated Country for up to 12 months from the day you become resident in GB
you can exchange your licence for a British one within five years of becoming resident
if you haven't exchanged your licence for a British one before the end of the first 12 months of becoming resident, you will need to stop driving

But I will call Admiral to see what they say.

Ah, so whereas European Community people get equal treatment, Aussies must exchange their licence after 12 months. Bummer.

If the waiting lists here in Ireland weren't so long, I'd suggest you pop over for a test. That way you'd be points-proof in the UK.

Just swap it... unless you are scared of getting points!

You can then get a new ozzie one by asking for a replacement in Oz. Thats what I did with my NZ one.

Not a lot, I love driving in England, the standard is SO much better than here. Other than that I have only driven extensively in Switzerland, no problems there either.

The only time I think you can call English drivers good is when you compare them to Italy.. but then again, don't think they really call it driving there... think it might be accelerator flat to the floor and steer. Germany would have to have one of the best drivers in the world. When we got back to the UK, it was a very noticeable difference.

I have both Oz and UK - on your next visit to Oz, tell em you misplaced your licence and need a replacement, then return here and exchange the 'misplaced' one for a UK.

With all due respect, that is a dumb thing to do.
If the Uk authorities catch you you could get a nasty wrist slap - don't forget in the Uk at least the driving licence is a primary form of id (we don't yet have id cards of course)

With all the anti-terrorist paranoia around, do you really want a potential alias in your pocket?

I wouldn't if I were you, I really wouldn't mate.

Sorry Nige, but I don't see where you figure this from, as both my licences have my picture and my name on them. I just have 2 licences, one for each country, just like I have dual passports and dual engineering quals.

But those (passport & quals) have been gained through legitimate channels.
Your 2nd licence has basically been gained through deception (fraud) unless I misread what you said?

Not true, I didnt say I got mine this way. When I got my UK licence I had to submit my oz one to DVLA and specified that I needed it back - they returned it to me with a UK one.

See, I misread it.

Still wouldn't recommend your first method though.
