off to goodwood tommorow to watch a mate wizz round in his elise so i just checked the oil to make sure i would get there.

anyway...dipstick cold and the oil is 15mm below the "add oil" bit....warm it up....burn finger on dip stick! and still under....so i guess i need oil!

what do i buy and can i just pour it in at the garage i buy it from in the am..ie. into a warm engine?

please just recomeded a simple oil to buy...cost no issue...dont get all techy with this 10/40 mineral synthetic stuff! just tell me!

i have been told today by 2 'experts' not to run my Chimaera on Mobil 1 cos it is too 'skinny'....get a thicker oil with a higher viscocity if possible

I use the thicker 15W50 Mobil 1 as that's what Fernhurst recomended when I got my Chim in March.

Ditto, Mobil 1 0w/40 oil is now considered too thin for TVRs despite the fact that is was once the oil of choice and recommended by TVR (allegedly there has since been some sort of communication from TVR to their dealers about this).

My dealer recommends Mobil Motorsport 15w/50, or alternatively any fully synthetic 15w/50 oil if pushed.

Would echo all written here, BUT...........

Don't mix sythetic with mineral they don't get on I would suggest a trip to nearest Halfwits or motor factor and bung in some 'decent' synthetic. I would imagine that is what is in there - unless you know different.

Reading Tiggsy's post...

Should one "dip" cold or hot.

Me, I have always been told cold unless the the engine is dry sumped.

I've heard this before but wonder why the TVR main agent that I use for servicing my 450 just put Mobil 1 in it at its 12k service if it isn't the right stuff?

You should check and top-up oil when engine is cold.

ps - I bought some Mobil 1 Motorsport 15w/50 from Halfords today - £34.99 for 4 litres.

Probably got done on the price, but needs must and all that.
