eg,

You're out for a pint and some scutter tries to start bother with you? pushing you around, and basically trying to drag you into a fight/altercation?

curious.

Usually just walk away, not worth the hastle ruining my night out with a punchup, and regardless of being job or not wont make a great deal of difference if you try and deal any other way.

Walk away, I am not going to leave myself open to allegations from some drunk fool. Would only get involved off duty if really necessary.

Warrant card waving is for training school recruits & specials.

I think walking away applies regardless of who you are to be honest.

what I was wondering about is when walking away isn't a feasible option.

Von, will you STOP sending me scans of your warrant card!

Seriously though, there was a case a while back where a certain high-ranking Cumbria officer with connections to speed cameras got into an online 'spat' and sent out legal warning notices on police headed paper...

...I think he got in trouble and we have not seen him since!

I tend not to bother, unless soemone's life is (potentially) at risk - the last thing I had any involvement with off duty was a drink driver I arrested.

I do phone in about stuff, and I'm less likley to get fobbed off by a disinterested call taker. It helps having the "right" contact numbers to start with as well.

That last bit sounds a bit Masonic...
