So what do you BiB think of specials these days?
Discussion
Friend of mines dad was in the police force. He retired a short while ago.
Back when he was in (about 10 years ago), he was having a rant about specials saying along the lines of "Although they are useful, its like having an officer with 99% of the privaledge, 1% of the training and most of them are just in it for the free power fix"
So what do you think of your hobby-bobby brothers in arms these days just out of interest?
Got 2 mates (well 1 mate and 1 that I don't really like) in the specials, one is a girl who is really passionate about it but has no interest in joining properly, one is a total knobhead who just loves the fact he can tell people what to do, and I believe had been reigned in for it before...

When I went to join the 'service/force' some years ago I was turned down after a few interviews when they realised that my eyesight (which had been checked a few months earlier) didn't meet their requirements.
All that wasted effort and time and they then go and tell me that while I'm not a suitable candidate for the paid police service/force, they would be happy to have me as a Special.
Thank you but FRO!

Are you not allowed to join the service if you need to use sight correction? You can join even if you need eyesight correction.
I've been a Special for 3 years and I have to say, some of my colleagues should not be in the role - many don't know their arse from their elbow. Having said that, there are a few regs who are cack too.
Luckily, where I am, we go out and get our own jobs and deal with the paperwork so aren't a burden to the regulars. The fact that some of us have a desire to join f/time tends to make us keener to learn and therefore more competent.
Before anyone asks, I want to become a regular rather than a special, but until someone comes along and makes up the £15K pay gap between my current salary and that of a new officer, I'll stay as a special.

Are you not allowed to join the service if you need to use sight correction? Most of the specials I work with every once in a while are pretty good. A lot have been 'in the job' for far longer than I have, so consequently know exactly what they are doing. They tend to pitch up mainly for public order duties.
There is one who is universally regarded as a total liability - he is young in service (so to speak), communicates poorly, blunders in, winds people up (both other officers and MOPs) and therefore gets assaulted quite regularly. He acts like he's on a power trip, however I think his main problem is a total lack of communication skills. I'm not sure whether he just needs a little tutoring or is a lost cause.

I think there is one like that in every nick. Ours is a total jobsworth, attracts more complaints than the regulars, and is - quite frankly - embarassing to work with at times.
One of the problems with Specials is the out-moded image of well-meaning uniform carriers wandering around the village fete. There are still some like that, but many of us who are performing the same sort of role as regulars - including being assaulted, going to court, doing the paperwork, and generally fitting in to the team.
PCSOs on the other hand...

My bother in law has a few of the Specials in his station. 2 of them got in a fight in the carpark because they could agree who would get to drive a car to another station. Another one tried to place one of his colleagues under citizens arrest for calling him a plonker IIRC
All shown the door I trust?JulianHJ said:
