My brakes have started to squeak. Not too loud, but loud enough to notice at slow speed. I've done 10000 miles, including one fairly hard track day. Does this mean that they'll need replacing soon? Not sure if I'd get a warning message on the onboard computer if they were getting low. I think the first service is due at 12000 miles, so I'd appreciate thoughts on whether I should visit the dealer sooner. Please forgive my mechanical ignorance!

Probably not worn out.

Likely that the pads have become glazed. Give them a bit of abuse and it might go away - I find washing the disc and letting it go a bit rusty before using the brakes helps sometimes, too.

Otherwise you could get the pads deglazed - or just ignore it!

If they are glazed, take the pads out and rub them with something abrasive – sandpaper, emery paper…

While you have them out put some copper slip on the back of the pads, this also helps to reduce the noise. And if you really want to be absolutely sure, then take the edges off the pads at approx 45 degrees with a file.

Hope this helps

Same thing has just started happening to mine (18000 miles). I like the "give it some abuse" idea - seems more interesting than cleaning

I finally read the manual. Apparently, squeaks can be due to ambient temperature etc. Also, the onboard computer will tell me when they need replacing, so I'll stop worrying about it.

Gave the car "a bit of abuse" today. Squeak has gone - hurrah!
